The Reluctant Homesteaders: October 2014
http://thereluctanthomesteaders.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
50 acres in Western Oregon. The family farm, passed down to us, The Reluctant Homesteaders. Time to get busy. Tuesday, October 21, 2014. The Smoke House, Done. I burned the midnight oil finishing the Smoke House this summer. It's not like I had a lot of spare time around here, but it was something I wanted to do and I had some real fun doing it. I mounted some old rusty Buck Saws that I'm sure were my great grandpas on the outside. On the other two holes I just put in those adjustable window screens.

50 acres in Western Oregon. The family farm, passed down to us, The Reluctant Homesteaders. Time to get busy. Sunday, July 20, 2014. Our Homestead Anniversary, 5 years and 200 posts. Finally, all the raspberries I can eat. That's right, this is The Reluctant Homesteaders' 200th blog post! And it has been 5 years, almost to the day, since Buck and I cautiously and at that time, a little reluctantly, took up the reins of my family's dilapidated and blackberry covered Homestead. One of the first things we h...

The Reluctant Homesteaders: Egg Dreams
http://thereluctanthomesteaders.blogspot.com/2015/03/egg-dreams.html
50 acres in Western Oregon. The family farm, passed down to us, The Reluctant Homesteaders. Time to get busy. Wednesday, March 25, 2015. You might remember that last June I hatched dark eggs from my Cuckoo Marans hens, in a very temperamental incubator. My goal was to increase the occurrence of extra dark eggs from my flock. I hadn't been to the auction in a couple of years and had forgotten what fun it can be. Dad came along and kept me company. And helped to catch the rooster that escaped. I received a...

The Reluctant Homesteaders: August 2014

50 acres in Western Oregon. The family farm, passed down to us, The Reluctant Homesteaders. Time to get busy. Sunday, August 17, 2014. 21 days is all it takes to make yourself a batch of chicks! Well 21 days of constantly messing with the temperature and humidity of a very temperamental and inexpensive incubator which was poorly situated in an uninsulated building just as a storm front came in. In the end I had 19 hatch out of 30 eggs. Not fantastic, but not bad either. All were healthy and fit. Of chick...

50 acres in Western Oregon. The family farm, passed down to us, The Reluctant Homesteaders. Time to get busy. Tuesday, November 25, 2014. What in The World Have We Been Up To? It's been a few weeks since a post and don't think it hasn't been on my list, but man, unless I can clone myself, posts are going to be a little thin for a while. We have been so busy. Children moving, friends in the hospital, Halloween (in this family, it is a HUGE production). I like the "Copper Penny" a lot. I am reluctant to bl...

The Reluctant Homesteaders: June 2015

50 acres in Western Oregon. The family farm, passed down to us, The Reluctant Homesteaders. Time to get busy. Wednesday, June 10, 2015. It is June, which is the appropriate time for little sprouts to appear. Our Littlest Little Friend on his Birthday. Our Littlest Friend is now our Second Littlest Friend. His little brother has entered the scene a little early but ready to roll. Our Second Littlest Friend has been helping Buck in the garden by picking strawberries, his little dog too. 3) Stomp on the mul...

Bees - Arnavon
http://arnavon.com/bees
8220;How do you tell the difference between European Honey Bees and Africanized bees? European bees make you honey. Africanized bees make you run! I hung up my bee veil in the late 1990s after most of the bees in Tucson had become africanized. I just didn’t want to take the chance that one of my neighbor’s dogs – or G-d forbid, a person, would be attacked by one of my hives gone bad. I am now thinking about building a top-bar hive. A horizontal top-bar bee hive. Here’s some links for more info:. So, this...

The Reluctant Homesteaders: Beauty Is In the Details

50 acres in Western Oregon. The family farm, passed down to us, The Reluctant Homesteaders. Time to get busy. Friday, June 8, 2012. Beauty Is In the Details. The "Art Shack" Micro House project continues. I ended up using some "click lock" laminate we already owned, on the floor. It's very practical and I like the way it looks against the rustic wood. These light fixtures were a birthday present from my super cool mother-in-law, who wholeheartedly supports anything called an "Art Shack". Standard bulb, w...

The Top Ten List of My Favorite Homestead Gadgets. I'm embarrassed to admit that I did not know the true value of this appliance until last year. One thing held me back- I thought Slow Cookers were for soup. But the reality is that they are little ovens too. All the while using very little energy. But that is not the end of it's ...
