Hoot Owl Hollow: September 2011

http://hootowlhollow.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

All about gardening - plants, cultivation, weed and pest control and what's happening here in Appalachian Ohio at Hoot Owl Hollow Nursery and Botanical Garden. Tuesday, September 13, 2011. Fall Blooming Perennials, Part 1. Chelone obliqua just doesn't look to me like a fall bloomer; maybe it's the pink bloom which doesn't seem to me to be a fall color. This one likes lite shade and doesn't seem to mind a slightly damp spot. About 2 feet tall or a little more and a slowly spreading clump. So that's it for...

It can be drunk hot or cold. It was said to be astringent and sedative, a good remedy for coughs or skin problems.

Hoot Owl Hollow: January 2012

http://hootowlhollow.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

All about gardening - plants, cultivation, weed and pest control and what's happening here in Appalachian Ohio at Hoot Owl Hollow Nursery and Botanical Garden. Saturday, January 28, 2012. When I used to take walks in the woods as a child, I always loved this plant. Lycopodium. Was more commonly known to me as ground pine or ground cedar, though it is neither. It is in the clubmoss. Of all of the uses, it was probably used most often as a dusting powder for eczema. And to prevent chafing in infants. We gr...

Hoot Owl Hollow: May 2011

http://hootowlhollow.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

All about gardening - plants, cultivation, weed and pest control and what's happening here in Appalachian Ohio at Hoot Owl Hollow Nursery and Botanical Garden. Sunday, May 15, 2011. I couldn't decide which plants to write about today, so here's a sample of what was blooming/growing in the garden today. I'm not sure of the proper Latin names for all of them off the top of my head so I'll do the best I can and fill them in tomorrow when I'm at my desk. Iris virginica 'Pink Form'. Polygonatum 'No Go Kai'.

A Flowery Hobby: February 2012

http://afloweryhobby.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 26, 2012. The above two photos are of Helleborus that are blooming now. I think they are so pretty, even the undersides of the leaves. Don't know what variety I have as they were a start from my daughter. My new header picture is also the helleborus. I like the crocus foliage and my photograper (daughter) got a good shot of the foliage in this pic-notice the buckeye behind the foliage. My daughter took these photos in her yard. She has lots of birds including these pretty cardinals.

A Flowery Hobby: March 2012

http://afloweryhobby.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, March 31, 2012. On Splitcoaststampers Featured Stamper forum they usually pick one person as Featured Stamper for the week and we are to make a card changing at least two things about one of their cards. Recently they had us all as featured stampers. We were to pick one of our own cards and make another one changing at least two things. The Coral Shells card is the one I chose of mine to Case. My dwarf iris have all bloomed out now; the blooms didn't seem to last as long this year. Too early in...

A Flowery Hobby: POTPOURRI

http://afloweryhobby.blogspot.com/2012/10/potpourri.html

Saturday, October 6, 2012. Back to blogging. I was down for most of the long, hot summer with shingles but feeling much better now so have a few things to share today. We lost our border collie dog, Lady, who is my profile picture. We now have a new border collie named Jack. He turned 3 on September 1 and now has a special place at our house. He loves for you to throw him a frisbee or a tennis ball everytime you go outside! The Knockout roses were the best bloomers in my yard this year and since the rain...

Tuesday, December 3, 2013. Intense heat, unbearable brightness, indescribable color. A million brilliant sparks. Wild, passionate, untamed. We bask in the glow as cold, dark night grudgingly yields, cowering helpless amongst the pines. Flames dance. Gyrating wildly with unbridled passion. Drawn like moths to the flame, longing to join the dance, we craft a surrogate. Fly, my fragile paper creature! Live life to its fullest! We celebrate life, and love, and the joy they bring. Encountering Nature Through Lens and Pen. Sunday, July 19, 2015. It's high noon in mid-July, and we're melting in the midst of the milkweed. Cooling showers are on the way, but for now they're nothing but a distant rumbled promise in the still, hot air. Only a single flowerhead brightens the formerly blossom-laden roadside stand, though abundant new growth offers hope for late summer nectarers. A single stride brings us to the emerald brink, and a quick peek inside finds our old friend Pseudacris crucifer.
