Supporting Wildlife in Our Own Gardens

http://www.horndeanbiodiversity.co.uk/Gardens.shtml

Supporting Wildlife in Our Own Gardens. Our gardens make up a living landscape all across the Country and the way we look after them can make a big difference to our wildlife. This page sets out some of the things we can do in our gardens to benefit the biodiversity of the natural world on which we all depend. A pile of dead wood. Or leaves and twigs in a secluded and shady corner of the garden provides a perfect habitat for numerous insects that in turn attract birds and mammals. Give birds somewhere to...

Russ's Blog: Silly me - left too early.

http://russbirdsetc.blogspot.com/2016/12/silly-me-left-too-early.html

Some periodic ramblings about bird, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, hovers and anything else that pops into my head. Sunday, 4 December 2016. Silly me - left too early. The gull roost was well lit and contained 100 Commons and a Med Gull. Frankly, I was too cold and sore to sit there any longer and drove home; both Ring-billed Gulls were on GoingBirding as soon as I got in so presumably came in to roost as I was driving away! Some periodic ramblings about bird, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, hovers and anything else that pops into my head. Saturday, 26 November 2016. Thursday, 24 November 2016. No BTD, just RBG. At Blashford just 50 Siskin, heard Kingfisher and Water Rail, no sign of Bittern nor GWE. On Ibsley Water three Goosanders followed by seven smart drakes (although well down on Bob's dusk count of 72! The ubiquitous post-perching Buzzard and 70 Pintails. Saturday, 19 November 2016. A little earlier the Common Scoter...

http://russbirdsetc.blogspot.com/2016_05_01_archive.html

Some periodic ramblings about bird, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, hovers and anything else that pops into my head. Tuesday, 31 May 2016. Burton Mill Pond (SWT). A few Speckled Yellows were buzzing around and a pair of Hairy Shieldbugs were joined end on end. A Garden Warbler sang away nearby and within a few yards of a Blackcap doing likewise, for a nice comparison. The roadside vegetation held the usual damsels but no dragons. Two nice tachinid flies namely Tachina fera. Dummy text with HOS Link.

Some periodic ramblings about bird, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, hovers and anything else that pops into my head. Tuesday, 27 December 2016. Revisit to Snow Bunting. Thursday, 22 December 2016. A couple of hours with precious little on either scrape, other than Teal and four Snipe. Just a single Buzzard. On the sea 25 each (approximately) of Eider, mostly males and Common Scoter (females). On the beach the Snow Bunting was down to six feet. Friday, 9 December 2016. No Cettis today, just Goldcrest.

Some periodic ramblings about bird, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, hovers and anything else that pops into my head. Thursday, 30 June 2016. Wednesday, 29 June 2016. Rather cool and pretty windy last night so the trap was virtually empty but this Elephant Hawk Moth was nice. A few Med Gulls were heading inland at 04:50. No Pete, no (or at least, very limited) power and hence no lunch! No one on reserve, that I saw, other than beshorted ARK (despite the weather! Unfortunately a smart Chrysotoxum. A coffe...

Some periodic ramblings about bird, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, hovers and anything else that pops into my head. Monday, 31 October 2016. Distant LTDuck and four Black-necked Grebes on a rising tide at Hayling but later the Eaststoke Shore Lark appeared to have moved on. Chores, then Eastney where nil and then Southsea Castle where three Rock Pipits but no early Purple Sandpipers. This Red Admiral sunbathing on a bike- stand was buzzed by two others. Some periodic ramblings about bird, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, hovers and anything else that pops into my head. Sunday, 31 July 2016. Normal service resumed today with the ubiquitous Willow Beauty and Riband Wave plus another three moths for the garden list this morning, two micros and Brimstone. A Song Thrush was singing well albeit distantly and was the first I've noticed here plus a Willow Warbler, also a first, and finally an overflying Bullfinch. Saturday, 30 July 2016. A Riband Wave-less trap.
