Home on the Range: Hoosier Family Traditions - Sugar Cream Pie

Friday, August 31, 2012. Hoosier Family Traditions - Sugar Cream Pie. I wasn't born in Indiana, but my Grandma L. was. Her brother R. left Indiana as an adult, as did Grandma, to go to Montana for land to homestead. He had never married, had no children. Dad said by the time he was ready to settle down, he was well into middle age and all the girls were long since married. So he simply continued about his business, living a somewhat unconventional life to the hilt. Yes, a State Pie, just as states have a...

Monday, July 27, 2015. Crash Pad Cooking - Gadzoodles! Weekends have a good purpose, but sometimes it's eating too much. Come Monday morning, there is that bathroom scale and a pot of coffee. I'm not obsessive about it, weighing myself just if my pants feel tight. But after I blew my knee out in a fall, I lost 20 some pounds and felt so much better after, I've worked to keep it off. I tried to do the no bread/no processed food Paleo thing - it didn't go so well. I made it almost a week. This was about 2 ...

Home on the Range: How Now Browned Cow
http://mausersandmuffins.blogspot.com/2015/07/how-now-browned-cow.html
Tuesday, July 14, 2015. How Now Browned Cow. Apparently I missed "National French Fry Day" yesterday. Today's choice was "National Nude Day" but after "National French Fry Day" NO ONE wants to be caught in the nude after eating the bag of Five Guys Fries. So I'm just going to be a day late on the fries for lack of time for anything else on my "Monday". Loaded Potato wedges with Sciracha dipping sauce. A nice little side dish for your "browned cow". Makes 4 side dish servings. 2 tablespoons olive oil.

Tuesday, July 28, 2015. Rounds Holes - Square Pegs. A couple of readers have asked me what planes I have flown. A few, some of them small and nimble, some of them, not so much. Yet many of them, like my favorite side arms, are like old and dear friends. Of muscle to keep the sort of pointy end forward. It was where I first met Old NFO. But it was the first ship I was a Commander on. But we still suffered the indignity of the remarks. . . ."hey - ya build that yourself"? One day, coming out of the Bay are...

Home on the Range: Life's Choices
http://mausersandmuffins.blogspot.com/2015/07/lifes-choices.html
Tuesday, July 21, 2015. The next day I bought the bat truck. Four wheel drive isn't my personal savior but I now looked down ON some of the other trucks. It had an extended cab and four doors and big tires. It's as nimble as a Humpback whale. But I bought it to haul stuff and for protection around me, not to play Speed Racer on the interstate. I stopped. It stopped. It didn't sound big, but still the hairs on my arms stood up. I moved, it moved. I stopped, it stopped. Coyote? I couldn't help share the su...

Wednesday, May 20, 2015. Moving On - A Chapter from Saving Grace. Chapter 47- Moving On. My husband and I had retrieved the rest of my things to be moved from my home to his. There was a box of dog toys on the porch which I couldn't bear to open. We had talked about getting another dog, looking at reputable breeders, checking ads; but I didn't think I was ready, waiting for a sign perhaps. That night as we went to sleep I dreamed of my old dog Barkley, something I’d not done in several months. In my pock...

Home on the Range: Spot on Dinner
http://mausersandmuffins.blogspot.com/2015/08/spot-on-dinner.html
Sunday, August 9, 2015. The weekend was busy as I had to head back on the road Sunday late, leaving Partner behind to tend the Range fires. So Sunday supper was going to be "use what's in the fridge up" before I started the drive back in the evening hours. 1 pound ground beef or venison. 1 and 1/4 cup sour cream (I used "light"). 1 and 1/4 cup green salsa (I used Trader Joe's). 1 jalapeno pepper seeded and finely chopped. Generous pinch of ancho chili powder (about 1/8th tsp). 8 small flour tortillas.

Wednesday, March 20, 2013. True Blued - The New Ruger Vaquero. Handgun hunters, pistol competitors and cowboy action shooting folks are fans of the single action, ideal for slow, deliberate shooting. The TV Western reigned supreme in the Fifties and Sixties. Unlike the post-war world in which they flourished, you could tell the good guys from the bad, and none of the guns were fully automatic. My favorites were Rifleman, Wanted Dead or Alive, and of course Have Gun Will Travel. I already have a revolver ...
