Horsham and Dorking Bird Ringing: January 2014

http://horshamringers.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Horsham and Dorking Bird Ringing. Sunday, 12 January 2014. The following are some of the recovery results from this last year. The male from a pair of Greylag Goose. Do move about a bit, this bird seems to keep changing its breeding and wintering sites. I had ever ringed (below). I don't get very many warbler recoveries and the two I got this year were both originally ringed elsewhere in Surrey. The first was a Blackcap. The large majority of Blue Tits. The fourth recovery was a juvenile ringed in my War...

Horsham and Dorking Bird Ringing: 2013 Roundup

http://horshamringers.blogspot.com/2014/01/2013-roundup.html

Horsham and Dorking Bird Ringing. Thursday, 9 January 2014. As is always the case, one year is never the same as another and 2013 was no different. The biggest change this year was the start of a second ringing site at Leith Hill which produced just over 1000 new birds and has assisted in increasing the Leith Hill total to 2734 new birds, but there was a big reduction in ringing in my garden which has compensated. 2013 saw a good deal of highlights including a number of firsts with singles of Buzzard.

Horsham and Dorking Bird Ringing: September 2013

http://horshamringers.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Horsham and Dorking Bird Ringing. Friday, 27 September 2013. A ringing session on Leith Hill on Tuesday was relatively quiet but turned up this unusual Blackbird. It is obvious by its active moult that it is a first calendar year bird, still showing some juvenile plumage in its body, tail, flight feathers, primary coverts and greater coverts. Its all black bill is also a sign of a first year bird. Friday, September 27, 2013. Tuesday, 17 September 2013. I have recently moved house to Broadbridge Heath and...

Horsham and Dorking Bird Ringing: October 2013

http://horshamringers.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

Horsham and Dorking Bird Ringing. Wednesday, 9 October 2013. TWO-BARRED CROSSBILL and COMMON ROSEFINCH. The ringing sessions on Leith Hill over the last couple of weeks have been very memorable, but mainly for birds that haven't been caught! 28th September saw the first Redwings. Migrating through as well as impressive movements of Swallow. 30th September saw continued good passage of hirundines as well as alba Wagtails. A large number of migrant Song Thrush. And 2 Ring Ouzel. The first two Lesser Redpoll.

Chris Mills Photo: March 2011

http://chrismillsphoto.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Website now live - www.chrismillsphoto.com. Tuesday, 29 March 2011. Standard "Kingfisher on stick" shot. A couple of days off work; a rare luxury in the life of a mortgage slave. Tuesday sees me at a SWT-run Wildlife and Farming day. so I figured an extra-long weekend would give me a chance to pursue a bird I've never quite managed a decent image of - the Kingfisher. Posted by Chris Mills. Sunday, 20 March 2011. Has the seemingly never-ending building work at the house caused too much disturbance?

Website now live - www.chrismillsphoto.com. Tuesday, 17 May 2011. Originally uploaded by Christopher Mills. Stick with what you know. That's my motto for the moment - I've had so little success with Barn Owls recently that I've conceded defeat for now. I did spot one bird quartering a field near the A29 on Friday night, after an evening visit to Pulborough Brooks, which may be an indication of things to come. More on that later…. Website now live - www.chrismillsphoto.com. Monday, 19 December 2011. A week of nothings! Short-eared owl at Waltham Brooks, by Christopher Mills. Having secured some rather nice flight images of the Short-eared owls, I've moved on to pursuing more selective shots. The main problem is that the owls have been largely ignoring the perch! So that the owls are used to the noise. It's disappointing to come away with nothing on the memory card, but there's no point blowing it for the same kind of shot I al...

Website now live - www.chrismillsphoto.com. Wednesday, 21 March 2012. Weekend in the Highlands. Isplaying Capercaillie, originally uploaded by Christopher Mills. What a beautiful country Scotland is! He also acted as cameraman for what we hope will be a decent video insight into the trip. My tendency to talk rubbish may well have a say here, but I'm looking forward to seeing the results! Website now live - www.chrismillsphoto.com. Wednesday, 11 January 2012. Originally uploaded by Christopher Mills. Above is my favourite image of 2011. It's nothing to write home about technically or aesthetically, but it encapsulates the drama and unpredictably of our wild animals. Turning to the coming year - my immediate plans are to spend some more time with the Short eared owls, chasing that elusive "battle" shot. I came very close earlier this week, only to have a inconsiderately-sited bush spoi...

The days are lengthening, grass growing and the animals are getting themselves, to quote from Bambi, "twitterpated"! Plenty to choose from if they can be found. Greater Spotted Woodpecker in the rain. The case for the D3s:. 2nd hand prices likely to drop to around £2600 or so, but only when D4 is established and available.
