Horsmonden Birder: February 2015

http://www.horsmondenbirder.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Furnace Pond viewed from the dam end. Monday, 16 February 2015. It was mixed weekend on the bird front. Saturday saw a flock of 80 or so Skylarks in the field at the top of Kirkins plus a small flock of Linnets and a single Yellowhammer. The lake remains pretty quiet with a Little Grebe,a Great crested Grebe and 10 Mandarins of note. One of the Buzzards was perched in the usual tree in Shirrenden and a Sparrowhawk was terrorising the Redwings and Fieldfares in the orchard. Tuesday, 10 February 2015. My ea...

Horsmonden Birder: October 2014

http://www.horsmondenbirder.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Furnace Pond viewed from the dam end. Monday, 20 October 2014. October is racing by but at least it has yielded two new ticks for the year.Nothing unusual has turned up but on the 9th the Canada Goose numbers peaked at 152 with the single Greylag tagging along. The 11th produced my first Little Grebe (103). Of the year although Glyn had seen one in the spring. The next day Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. This is my first October record.Whilst watching it charging around the field I had my first Brambling.

Horsmonden Birder: May 2015

http://www.horsmondenbirder.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Furnace Pond viewed from the dam end. Friday, 15 May 2015. The first Spotted Flycatcher (89). Arrived on 11th with two in the small wood on the dam end and later the same day the first Turtle Dove (90). Was caught in flight and then purred from inside the tree it had landed in. On the 13th I received news of two birds that had been seen in the garden of Hononton farmhouse. The first was a Black Redstart on the 21st March and the second a HOOPOE! I consoled myself with the sighting of a Whinchat (91).

Horsmonden Birder: March 2015

http://www.horsmondenbirder.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Furnace Pond viewed from the dam end. Sunday, 29 March 2015. Once again the month has whizzed by and the list has crept along. The 12th saw me adding Red Legged Partridge (66). At six o'clock in the morning as one was on the road outside our house as I pulled off the drive. The following day I had the first Chiffchaff (67). Of the year as one was calling at the southern end of the lake. First Chiffchaff of the year. On the 23rd I added a Coot (69). Of the spring.I wondered if it was a migrant or a bi...

Horsmonden Birder: Saturday 25th April 2015

http://www.horsmondenbirder.blogspot.com/2015/04/saturday-25th-april-2015.html

Furnace Pond viewed from the dam end. Saturday, 25 April 2015. Saturday 25th April 2015. At last a few summer migrants have started to arrive on the patch. Saturday 18th saw me starting my walk in the derelict orchard behind Tucks Cottages in the hope of finding a Willow Warbler in the place that they have nested in the last few years.Unfortunately none were found but a Cuckoo was calling as I entered and was answered by another towards the lake. And even better,a Lesser Whitethroat (79). Today started i...

Pittswood Birds: August 2015

http://pittswoodpatch.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

About Me And My Patch. Monday, 31 August 2015. Heavy rain fell throughout most of the morning, but a short lived dry spell allowed me to make a circuit of Migrant Alley, before more rain curtailed the hour long walk. Looking back at my stats and comparing this August to the previous thirteen, they show this August had the fourth highest bird species total of 74. The sun went in for the last few shots, but they came out ok. Sunday, 30 August 2015. Needless to say not a single bird was seen in the vicinity!

http://pittswoodpatch.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-weather-was-fine-and-sunny-with.html

About Me And My Patch. Saturday, 1 August 2015. The weather was fine and sunny, with virtually no wind, perfect for the first full patch walk of the new month. Here's how I kicked off the August tally then, in the order of appearance. I took a distant shot of it. Then managed a closer, but still obscured shot,. This looks to be a different one to the couple I photographed last week, judging by the wing damage seen. 1 August 2015 at 18:17. 1 August 2015 at 18:23. Lovely BH shots Warren. Would love the...

http://pittswoodpatch.blogspot.com/2015/08/another-lovely-morning-of-sunshine-last.html

About Me And My Patch. Sunday, 9 August 2015. Another lovely morning of sunshine, the last for a while if the forecasters are to be believed! The fine, sunny and warm weather didn't bring out many birds though, an early walk around the sheep pasture and paddocks of Migrant Alley was pretty birdless, just a few STARLINGS, Corvids and the odd flyover PIED WAGTAIL. Unusually this individual allowed me to photograph it as it preened. It's not quite what I was looking for on the fence lines though! Libellules...

About Me And My Patch. Friday, 22 May 2015. Early sunshine gave way to scattered cloud around 07:30hrs this morning, but it remained warmer than of late, with little wind. A quick circuit of Migrant alley was made first thing, I don't expect any passage migrants here now, but there again you never know! Anyway there wasn't any today, just 5 each of CANADA and GREYLAG GOOSE on one of the paddocks, plus a few LINNETS. Something at last to add to the May list! Lots of photo's today! 22 May 2015 at 18:23.

http://pittswoodpatch.blogspot.com/2015/08/a-cloudy-start-to-day-gave-way-to-some.html

About Me And My Patch. Wednesday, 5 August 2015. A cloudy start to the day gave way to some sunny spells by 09:00hrs, but it clouded over again by midday, when some very light showers fell, at least the wind has dropped a bit! Yesterday I bemoaned the fact that considering it was August, nothing seemed to be moving yet, well this morning that had changed! My skywatch went on to produce a couple of species for the months list too, with flyovers from CORMORANT. And LESSER BLACK BACKED GULL. Once the sun wa...

About Me And My Patch. Sunday, 17 May 2015. Long sunny spells this morning helped for a better patch visit today, where in the full patch walk I ended up with 49 species, 10 more than yesterday! I added MAGPIE to the patch 'successfully bred' list when a couple of newly fledged ones were seen together at the Small Holding area and I added TAWNY OWL. CHIFFCHAFF, BLACKCAP, GOLDCREST, COAL TIT, LONG TAILED TIT, BULLFINCH, JAY, GREAT SPOTTED and GREEN WOODPECKERS, MISTLETHRUSH, SONGTHRUSH and STOCK DOVE were...
