Hotbed of Intrigue: The humidity of other planets
http://hotbedofintrigue.blogspot.com/2010/07/humidity-of-other-planets.html
Controversies in and critiques of arts and culture in Philadelphia and elsewhere. Wednesday, July 28, 2010. The humidity of other planets. This month has been one of my busiest ever, I think. Late June and early July had me bartending at a furious pace during World Cup soccer matches, after which I immediately segued into a titanic, non-arts-related writing assignment. So, from Sunday, a preview of the Philadelphia Orchestra's presentation of Planet Earth Live. Also, a feature on Red KoolAde. Showcase, p...
Hotbed of Intrigue: May 2010
http://hotbedofintrigue.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Controversies in and critiques of arts and culture in Philadelphia and elsewhere. Thursday, May 27, 2010. A first: a short piece. In Washington City Paper. Made possible by a colleague and former editor who landed there after a paper here in Philly went belly-up (only to emerge in a different form. Sans arts coverage). I used to pick up WCP on trips into DC from the Shady Grove Metro station, and I may have more bylines there in the future. Yes, I know I don't live in DC. I'll make it work. My apologies ...

Hotbed of Intrigue: Reflection/anticipation
http://hotbedofintrigue.blogspot.com/2009/06/reflectionanticipation.html
Controversies in and critiques of arts and culture in Philadelphia and elsewhere. Wednesday, June 10, 2009. Some thoughts on Friday's concert by The Crossing. Thrilling and exhausting gestures in John McCabe's Scenes from America Deserta. Wordless glissandos, dense layering, lots of sibilance and chattering syllables. Busy rather than stark. Much more tumultuous than expected for something intended to evoke a desert. Two calmer pieces to cool things down. Paul Fowler's Potter's Clay. Exact quote from con...

http://kvpoe.blogspot.com/2010/09/worlds-most-impressive-really-old-guy.html
Thursday, September 23, 2010. World's Most Impressive Really Old Guy. My sister directed me to this video of an interview with Walter Breuning, the world's oldest living man (there are three women still living born earlier in 1896), who just turned 114 this past Tuesday, September 21. In the interview he answers questions sent in from all over the world about what it has been like to live in three different centuries. This guy is amazing! It's really worth watching the whole thing:. Via the daily what.

Thursday, May 28, 2009. Last night was the first meeting of my two-month-long letterpress class at the Atlanta Printmakers Studio. Given the events of the past few weeks, and especially tonight. I thought the first print I pressed myself (of type previously set by our teacher Jason Kofke. Friday, May 22, 2009. At precisely this time next year, I will be at some stage of readying myself for a wedding: Mine! The term "negative-one-year anniversary" is used with kind permission of Abby J. Wolbe, Esq. Monday, September 14, 2009. Brach's has taken to touting its candy corn as being MADE WITH REAL HONEY in recent seasons. One day in the not-too-distant past I thought to myself, hey, I have a good source of real honey, maybe I should try and make my own candy corn! I googled the recipe. And, to my great surprise, located approximately zero recipes that involve real honey. Doh. On the other, how crazy do I have to be to want to do that? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Wednesday, October 28, 2009. Go faster, day. When I had the above phrase posted as my gchat. Status, one of my nerdiest and most brilliant friends messaged me the following:. I know it seems like the day is not going much faster, which could be accurate. As the (negative) secular spin acceleration was -19.8 parts per billion per century around the year 600 AD and is now -8.6 parts per billion. The net residual acceleration is 41 ppb. I love smart people. Tuesday, October 13, 2009. Half the people who rec...

Thursday, June 25, 2009. Where were you last night? Because I was ON THE SECOND ROW AT THE EDDIE VEDDER CONCERT. Let it be known that Ten Club is the best fan club in the history of fan clubs. Sure, they put out the Christmas singles in June, but they make up for any delays by making sure members always have SWEET tickets to shows. I LOVE YOU, TEN CLUB! You can see all my pictures from the show here. Wednesday, June 24, 2009. Seen in my office parking deck. Yes, it's real.). Monday, June 22, 2009. Nevert...

This is an adventure." - Steve Zissou. Saturday, March 27, 2010. Sam got a basketball and hoop for his birthday and has a mean case of March Madness. He plays non-stop and says "ball, ball, ball" when he's not playing. We don't have the heart to suggest that he might want to pick another sport since he's going to be about 5'2 until his senior year in high school. Thursday, March 18, 2010. Baby Sam Turns ONE! Hot Bed Press Printmakers: Exhibitions & Events
Monday, 19 October 2009. There was so much to see at the conference; exhibitions, panels, demonstrations and 'poster presentations', [for those like us who don't know what these are - they are session slots for a stall or stand to be presented, so called because they have posters pinned up behind them]. Over the 4 days it was a military operation to make sure you got to the sessions you wanted to get to without missing out on anything else if you could possibly fit it in.
