Investigating Houston's Waterways. In 2011 I received the opportunity to report on any topic I chose for a project at Sarah Lawrence College. My choice? The state of Houston’s bayous. Investigating Houston's Waterways. The following videos show the potential of the bayous; they can be used as both a source of recreation and enjoyment. The annual Regatta held within Houston is just one example of the benefits of restoring the bayous. Flooding is a major issue in Houston and can wash trash and debris into the bayous which then get caught on logs and cause large backups. These videos are prime examples of this. Investigating Houston's Waterways. May 1, 2011. Tangled thickets of black willow, cottonwood and elderberry interspersed with wax myrtle and the foreign Chinese tallow crowd the banks on either side of the bayou which winds, light brown and slow, through the flat landscape. On lazy, summer afternoons, the occasional copperhead or water moccasin can be seen floating in the water before swimming hurriedly away towards the safety of low hanging limbs and vines. A marker commemorating the founding of Houston.
