The world needs more oboists. I'm trying to raise one. We found out that band camp. Was good for more than just annoying boy stories. At her last lesson, Opie was going over Largo with Teacher. He was explaining that it wasn’t really written for the oboe, as there were no spots where you can breathe. In a thoughtful tone, she pops out with but maybe you could use circular breathing.”. The world needs more oboists. I'm trying to raise one. Occasionally I get it right. This afternoon, Opie came home from school and almost immediately plunked herself in front of the piano. She practiced her pieces, her cadences, and played some old favorites. She even called me over several times to demonstrate a special piece or to show how she had something memorized. This was all great. I’m quite happy she is enjoying this and I love peeking in the living room and seeing her engrossed in her music.

The world needs more oboists. I'm trying to raise one. The many pluses of band camp. Opie just finished up a week of band camp. It’s a short little camp, 1.5 hrs a day for 5 days, with a performance this afternoon. It’s been absolutely great. I have been trying to put together all the benefits I have seen:. 15 hours * of oboe playing a day, no fuss or complaint. Sometimes more – some practicing before band sessions of tricky bits, also a lesson in the middle of the week. Learning 6 new pieces in a week.

Thursday, July 30, 2015. I was working with a student on a band solo, in a programmatic piece about the prairie or the wide open spaces or something like that. You know the kind of generically expansive, colorful wind writing I'm talking about - kind of Copland-y and with some 5/4 and 7/8 bars mixed in so we can all tell that it's meant to be free and untamed.
