GIS英文全名為Geographic Information System，一套完整的GIS運作系統，儲存龐大的空間資訊，不但能呈現電子地圖，且具有詳細屬性資料以備查詢，並能讓人們在電腦螢幕上操作、疊合、重組、抽離、分析各種空間資訊，一目了然，看到自己的生活環境與周遭世界。GIS是一門新技術，所牽涉的學術基礎涵蓋地圖學、電腦資訊科學、地理學、測量學、遙感探測、數學、統計及商業資料處理。而在應用方面，大致可分為六類型：. １地點(Location)查詢：如「最近一家麥當勞在哪裡？」. ２狀況(Condition)查詢：如「台北市目前共有幾家金石堂？」. ３趨勢(Trend)探討：如「過去二十年來，台灣各縣市人口增長趨勢與分布情形為何？」. ４最佳路線(Routing)安排：求得兩點間最具效率，或景點最多的途徑等，像快遞公司每日送貨服務最經濟省時的走法，就需要做進一步的分析計算。 5模式分析(Pattern)：如垃圾掩埋場最適地點的選擇評估，或野生動物棲地活動範圍與道路間的關係。 12288; GIS起源於北美1965年美國首度將統計量化資料用電腦自動繪圖方式以地圖的形式來呈現，...
