Double Cluster and Comet Hartley. The short period Comet 103P/Hartley. Cruised by the Double Cluster. NGC869 and NGC884) on Thursday night, October 7th, while I was at the Okie-Tex star party. Having observed it while I was taking pictures I can say this image highlights the comet far more than what one saw with binoculars or a telescope. It was actually difficult to discern while near the double cluster! Click image for larger version (1440x980, 700kb). 10072010, about 22:30. Canon 5D Mark II, unmodified.

Looking east at the end of astronomical darkness a cone of light reachs high into the sky above the Okie-Tex star party. The big tent and most of the west observing field is visible in this view. The camera is level, the ultra wide angle lens used to take this picture distorts the appearance of straight lines. Interesting how much air glow is visible in this as well as the other images taken at the time. I wonder if the morning Zodiacal light is dimmer than that seen in the evening? Need to research this.

This comet is not visible to the naked eye but will brighten more as it gets closer to us next year. Canon 200mm f2.8 @ f4.0. Stack of 7, 180 second exposures at ISO 1600. 53°F, 90%rh,Good transparancy and seeing. Calibrated and combined in ImagesPlus. Additional adjustments in Photoshop CS2.

Taken the night I watched the Flint Hills burning. 04092010, starting at 23:00. AP 130 @ f6 w/field flattener. Canon 350D, Hutech modified type I. Stack of 16, 7 minute exposures at ISO 800 (. Decent transparency for the conditions, very windy, temperature around 50°F. Calibrated with bias, dark and flat frames.
