Many years ago, I keep everything as text files, and I do mean everything. I’ve even converted my notes associated with my taxes into a single. Text file instead of loading up a big-app spreadsheet. Spacemacs is a new distribution of Emacs. Think what Ubuntu did for GNU/Linux - Spacemacs is doing the same for GNU Emacs. It combines all the existing great pieces and providing an easy-to-use good-looking package. I used to use my own emacs configuration. And then switched to Prelude. For its neat Clojure.
