Once again, I pulled weeds for hours in the blazing sun. Once again, I came home with a car full of potential dye plants. And once again, it's a total miracle that I didn't get a horrible case of poison oak. I got a more terra-cotta flowerpot orange color. I wonder why this batch was browner? Link to this post. I had gotten myself into the stupid mindset of thinking that I had to write something truly momentous, and so of course, I wrote nothing at all. I'm going to cut myself some slack, and not worry so much about perfection. I'm going to give myself permission to use unedited cellphone photos, because I'd gotten a bit hung-up on only posting "real" photographs. What is it they say? Le mieux est l'ennemi du bien.

Tuesday, August 04, 2015. The Seasons First Butterfly. Today Robb released the first Anise Swallowtail to emerge from its chrysalis. Clearly, we need to move the butterfly tank outdoors, so that Robb isn't stuck herding confused butterflies out of our pantry window. Beautiful. I grow a lot of tall zinnias in my vegetable patch and have recently seen a lot of swallowtails. I plan to follow some of your tips for increasing them. What a beautiful thing you guys do. I love this, and I love your blog.

Thursday, April 16, 2015. For the last few summers, Robb and I have collected the Anise Swallowtail caterpillars that we find on our fennel, and raise them in our pantry. This keeps them safe from hungry birds, and other predators. The caterpillars eat voraciously, and form chrysalises quite quickly.
