Great drinks for normal people. The Perfect IPA – Part 1. 19 July, 2011. India Pale Ale can mean a lot of things. Super-hoppy, almost lager-coloured american ones are a favourite of mine. They can be very strong, but not always. I’ve gathered three here to compare, and I’ll be testing a few more in the future. The first is Greene King’s ‘Very Special’ IPA, which looks similar to their bog-standard IPA, but is much stronger and comes in a smaller bottle. Colour: amber with a real reddish hue rusty/copper.

Great drinks for normal people. The Perfect IPA – Part 3. 6 August, 2011. Sainbury’s Taste the Difference IPA (5.9%) 2.09 500ml (brewed by Marston’s). Appearance: Pale orange-gold, very clear. Nose: Subtle. Straw, grapefruit, malt, orange peel, slight mango, farmyard. Palate: Very light, clean and fresh. Lemon and grapefruit hoppiness. Mid-long finish. Great drinks for normal people. The Perfect IPA – Part 2. 4 August, 2011. Here are two more widely-available IPAs:. Marston’s Old Empire IPA (5.7%), 500ml, Sainsbury’s 1.89, sometimes 2 for 3. Nose: Biscuit-y, hops, Malty. Palate: No surprises. Nicely hoppy and malty, slight honeysuckle and grapefruit. Has everything you would expect from an IPA, but nothing makes it stand out. 6.5/10.
