General news about emerging practices across JISC. Change is endemic in the education sector. I doubt anyone could disagree with that statement. There certainly wasn’t anyone at today’s workshop that disagreed. External regulations; legislation; funding changes; competition; doing more with less (or the same); new technology; new staff; and new ideas are just a small sample of some of the drivers for change that we face on a daily basis. Monte Carlo Simulations Using R. I’ve been using R to do risk analysis. R is statistics software that is freely available from the R Foundation for Statistical Computing. It is a command line tool, which may put some people off, but worth the effort; I see command line as a benefit over GUI tools, but that is my developer roots showing. I got interested in doing risk analysis using monte carlo engines after reading How to Measure Anything, by Douglas W. Hubbard. 10 to $20 maintenance costs saved per unit.
