Hill Rise Allotment Association - Spring 2010

Friday, April 30, 2010. Welcome to the Spring 2010 newsletter. And welcome also to all our new members. I hope that you are finally enjoying the spring weather after the long cold and wet winter. It is nice to be picking asparagus now and seeing the fruit trees in blossom. We have had mercifully few frosts during flowering (at least at the time of writing) so I am keeping my fingers crossed for plenty of plums and pears later in the year. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Hill Rise Allotment Association - Spring 2010: Spring walks

http://hraaspring2010.blogspot.com/2010/04/spring-walks.html

Friday, April 30, 2010. Now is a perfect time to park the car in Somersham and amble around the 2.5 miles of easy walking through open fields and allotments. Good points of this circular route (click map to enlarge) are spring and autumn orchard blossom or fruit, summer crops, and the development of allotment plots. You can end the walk in a typically English tea room with delicious cakes and value for money snacks by popping into Mary’s Tea Room in the High Street. Or the mounds of yellow meadow ants?

Hill Rise Allotment Association - Spring 2010: Botanical notes

http://hraaspring2010.blogspot.com/2010/04/botanical-notes.html

Thursday, April 29, 2010. Plants are grouped into Families according to the structure of their flowers, fruit and other distinguishing factors, for example leaf arrangements, even chemicals they produce. So why are plant families important to the vegetable grower? Well, if you’re following a rotation system it is necessary to know what family your vegetables belong to. It is also useful, for the same reasons, to know which family your weeds belong to as well. Liliaceae- onion, garlic, leek, chives,shallo...

Hill Rise Allotment Association - Spring 2010: The world of onions

http://hraaspring2010.blogspot.com/2010/05/world-of-onions.html

Thursday, April 29, 2010. The world of onions. One thing you’re bound to see at the allotment is plenty of onions, but do you really ‘know your onions’? A phrase which dates from the 1920’s apparently…). Cultivated onions were actually brought over to this country by the Romans and the name probably came from the Latin ‘unio’. However the Anglo Saxons called an onion ‘cipe’ which is related to our modern day ‘chives’. Today too onions are associated with antiseptic and health giving properties. Roman...

Hill Rise Allotment Association Autumn 2010: Welcome to the Autumn 2010 newsletter

http://hraaautumn2010.blogspot.com/2010/10/welcome.html

Welcome to the Autumn 2010 newsletter. Our first full year as an allotment association has ended, topped off with our AGM on the 19th October. Thanks to everyone who turned up on a wet cold evening, it was much appreciated. But above all the show should be fun and I think I can honestly say it was one of the more enjoyable things we have done this year, certainly in terms of organising it. Hill Rise Allotment Association Winter 2011: Storm the first prize with successful scones

http://hraawinter2011.blogspot.com/2011/01/storm-first-prize-with-successful.html

Storm the first prize with successful scones. In this year’s produce show on 3. September we’ve got a new class, and that’s a set recipe for scones. Now, why have a set recipe and why pick scones? A set recipe means everyone who enters has used exactly the same ingredients. You might imagine this would result in identical looking entries, but it rarely happens. A set recipe really tests the baking skills of the cook and so it is a technical challenge. The second question of ‘why scones? Over the next wee...

Hill Rise Allotment Association Autumn 2010: Can you name the bug?

http://hraaautumn2010.blogspot.com/2010/09/can-you-name-bug.html

Can you name the bug? Here are some insects commonly seen around allotments… if you look carefully enough. Can you name them? To see the answer highlight the section between the asterisks. If you see this you’ll think you’ve found something rare and exotic, and twenty years or more ago you’d have been right, but with warming climates this spectacular creature is becoming more common in southern England, emigrating in spring and autumn to and from southern Europe. Large and hairy, this insect is generally...

Hill Rise Allotment Association Winter 2011: Book review

http://hraawinter2011.blogspot.com/2010/12/book-review.html

We were recently sent a book called "The Allotment Source Book" by Caroline Foley, to review. When I opened it I thought it was going to be a heavy on pictures and low on detail (although admittedly, they are good pictures). But as I read it, I did actually find some useful information which I had not come across before, like a section on allotment forestry. The Allotment Source Book. Although potatoes and deadly nightshade both have alkaloids and many alkaloids are highly poisonous, all the Solanaceae don’t necessarily have the same alkaloids. Atropa belladonna. Big bud disease of blackcurrants. This is a good time of year to check over your Blackcurrant bushes for signs of the mites that carry a mycoplasma disease which causes reversion. Reversion disease seriously reduces yields of fruit. In early summer when the mites emerge from the buds they can be carried on the wind to new plants. If you are unsure whether you have big bud or not I am happy to check your bushes for you, just contact me via treasurer@hraa.org.uk. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Know of...

Hill Rise Allotment Association Summer 2010

Welcome to the Summer 2010 newsletter. I hope your allotments are all doing well, despite the dry weather. The cold, wet winter now seems a dim and distant memory, after these rainless weeks since March and the frosts in late May. Certainly it has been another challenging year weather-wise! I’m sure everyone will be keen to see the allotments improve and their impact in the town increase. Two key activities for the future and which are covered in more detail in separate articles are….
