Iron Smelting

http://www.hrafnstead.org/Metalworking/Smelting/Smelting.htm

Based on information from a lot of places, see References. Page for background information. Some friends and I have been wanting to try to smelt iron for a while, and finally did it! We made a base of cinder blocks, placed firebricks around a cardboard tube, and covered the whole thing with cob (clay mixed with sand and straw). We built a tap arch (visible in these pictures) but did not end up using it. Construction Details. Breaking open the smelter, pulling out the bloom and initial consolidation!

Whittle Tang Handles

http://www.hrafnstead.org/Woodworking/Handles/WhittleTang/WhittleTang.htm

I have experimented some with burning holes for tangs, but I have usually found it easier to drill the holes. Getting the hole the right size is a little tricky - too small and the handle may split as you drive the tang into it, too large and you may need glue and wedges to hold the tang in place (or the blade may seem okay at first, but loosen with use). If all goes well, you've got a whittle tang handle! For deciding what size of hole to use, a drill bit gauge is very handy! A drill press makes it a *l...

Finding and Processing Clay

http://www.hrafnstead.org/Ceramics/ProcessClay/Clay.htm

Finding and Processing Clay. Just basic info for now, will expand this when I have time. There is also a good web site about processing clay here. If the clay had lots of sticks/rocks in it, and/or if you're planning to use it for pottery, I recommend purifying the clay (see next step). If the clay seems pretty clean or if you're planning to use it for cob, you may be able to use it as-is (skip to Drying clay). But for pottery you will need to remove more water. Back to Main Page.

Making Cob

http://www.hrafnstead.org/Misc/Cob/Cob.htm

Cob is a mixture of clay, sand, and straw similar to adobe. It has been used for building for thousands of years, as it can be readily made from materials available is most parts of the world. It does not require any special tools or equipment, but is very labor-intensive. Clay provides the stickyness that holds the cob together. See Finding and Processing Clay. Straw provides some larger-scale support and helps prevent cracking. Also reduces weight a bit. Putting it all together. Back to Main Page.

Blacksmithing

http://www.hrafnstead.org/Metalworking/Blacksmithing/Blacksmithing.htm

I've started to document projects I have don't, both for my own records and as a possible help to anyone starting out who might want to make something but isn't quite sure how to begin. If any of the steps are not clear, please let me know! Blade from Damascus Scrap. Back to Main Page.
