Underwent at least six construction phases spanning almost 600 years. As a result, it rises almost 32 meters above the plain separating the two Huacas. These structures were covered in patios and enclosures connected by corridors and ramps. Some of the enclosures were roofed and embellished with murals or friezes painted in striking colors.

Writing was never developed in the central Andes. Nothing was known of the Moche culture until the end of the last century when archaeological exploration and material remains revealed Moche's existence. Until that time, the great adobe monuments known today as the. Y de la Luna were described by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spanish chroniclers as the works of the gentiles (indigenous peoples) a term they used to refer to the descendants of native peoples in the New World.

During Moche phase V the priestly elite lost prestige, and we see the beginnings of a new, more secular power structure separate from the priestly elite. This move toward a more secular administration was crystallized several centuries later by the Chimú.
