The Hubbardton Battlefield - Overview. One of the most successful rear guard actions in American history, the Battle of Hubbardton was the only Revolutionary War battle fought entirely in Vermont. During the early morning hours of July 7, 1777, British General John Burgoyne's army met the resistance and bravery of Americans for the first time in the Battle of Hubbardton. A massive British invasion from Canada chased the Continental Army from Mount Independence south to Hubbardton.

The Battle of Hubbardton - Brief History. American Major General Arthur St. Clair, retreating from Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Independence, had left at Hubbardton about 1000 men to form a rear guard. Through this maneuver, St. Clair was not only able to escape after the British arrived with his weary and tattered main army, but he also stopped the pursuing forces in their tracks. On July 9th and 10th, the 239th anniversary of the Battle of Hubbardton will be observed at the Battlefield.

Directions to Hubbardton Battlefield. Hubbardton is 20 miles northwest of Rutland. To reach the Hubbardton Battlefield, take exit 5 from Route 4 and drive about 7 miles north. Signs will be posted along the way. From Route 30 in Hubbardton, take Monument Hill Road east for six miles to the Battlefield. Regular admission is $3.00 per person with children under 15 free, except for Reenactment weekend in July when admission is $6.00 per person with children under 15 free.
