Project films are due to me in exactly one month. My, how the months fly! But this is an exciting time to be a part of the project because, as they move into post-production, the filmmakers are starting to share teasers of their films in photos and videos. Talking about the Expecting Goodness project. There’s more to come!

Newer posts →. December 2, 2013 · 6:22 pm. Recently, I have been transcribing some of my mother’s unpublished writing. More than any other topic, she wrote about her parents. Over and over, she returned to unhappy memories. Reading these essays, stories, and journal entries, I find myself weighed down by dark images from her childhood. This year, what didn’t feel right is easy to name. My mother was not here for Thanksgiving. Our mashed potatoes had no celery salt. We didn’t talk about my mom all d...

Thursday, March 08, 2007. Bad things happen when you lie! Having not practiced the art of lying for so many years, i am evidently well out of practice. (although i will say that i am very good at it when it's intended to have a little fun with strangers, like the time i introduced myself to a sales pitcher as brad's wife on the day i first met brad). So anyway, here's my big secret.it's not a cat scratch, it's a zit! I spilled the secret i've been guiltily harboring for almost 22 hours now! So here i am,...

Notes from a hometown history dork. Tuesday, May 10, 2011. I had a great conversation with my friend, Denise Frazier last night about distinct ethnic-cultural groups and their blending and shifting over time. Mix that up for 300 years and you end up with a diverse blend with shades of many, many distinct groups. And as a result, the Delta has a distinct identity. It's a unique sub-set of Southern culture. I could go on about the current political implications of local Scots-Irish descendants serving the ...

Notes from a hometown history dork. Friday, September 03, 2010. Bridges to the Past. I don't make the mistake of imagining that every Roman bridge was precisely hand-cut from the finest granites, or inlaid with fountains and marble relief sculpture, but I do see a gulf that stands between what Romans seemed to value in their public infrastructure and what 21st century Americans value. They will see these structures. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Who is this guy anyway? Spartanburg, SC, United States.

Notes from a hometown history dork. Thursday, March 10, 2011. A friend and I were chatting the other day about the popularity of time travel as a storytelling device and I thought I'd take this chance to flesh out some of my thoughts about the influence of one particular time travel story. There were only a handful of movies I watched in heavy rotation as a child, and without a doubt the one most often in our VCR from about 1990 on was Back to the Future. It's dangerous to treat this as a true case story...

Thursday, June 05, 2008. A new start on old news. A four or five paragraph long post was just eaten up by the wonders of modern technology, and as i am getting ready to go work out (and thankfully get rid of some of the frustrations caused by said eating of post), i will leave you only with the pictures i would've posted alongside accompanying lost text. Notes from a hometown history dork. Thursday, October 14, 2010. I've got another post in the works, but I thought it might be good to make a stopgap post in the meanwhile. It's a core value for me that place is an important component of existence. I suspect that most people don't dwell on what place means quite as much as I do. It's second only to time in how I go about viewing the world, which says a lot coming from an historian. I won't even get into what it means to "own" a place!

Notes from a hometown history dork. Tuesday, December 07, 2010. Like many children of the 1980s, I had a bright red, plastic View-Master among my toy arsenal. For those who don't remember, the View-Master was a popular children's toy that allowed three-dimensional color images to be viewed by inserting paper disks embedded with color film. Let me know if you come across any, even the ones I've listed! Here's one from the 1910 Confederate reunion, during a parade through Morgan Square:. Subscribe to: Post...

A collection of creative types keen on making inventive solutions to help brands buzz. When we toured Stuyver’s shiny, new, state-of-the-art bakery two things became obvious: 1. These guys loved their bread and 2. We had to make sure all their potential clients knew it. So we went about re-branding Stuyver’s from top to bottom. With a fresh identity, custom photography and a new website, we lifted their brand to match the quality of their facility and the passion of their character. A brand new brand.

Monday, July 25, 2011. 2011 Hubbard Family Reunion. At least 90 people showed up for the reunion this year at Oakdale Park in Glen Rose, TX. We (Sonny's family) had 10, Aunt Jerry, 34, Uncle Richard, 13, Uncle Don, 6, Joyce Ann, 27. It was hot but having it on the weekend brought a bigger crowd. Some weren't able to spend the whole weekend but it was great to see familiar faces that we'd not seen in a while. Diving at the pool was fun to watch.
