Hugging Kenyan Trees

Tuesday, 10 August 2010. I don't have a spade, but I do have a pen. It's with the encouragement of the 'Express' residential course, only 5 days away from our hostel in Zambezi, that I've remembered the purpose of my mini adventure: to increase awareness in my in own country of those who go without, every day, often as a result of our decisions; and to 'encourage love for our global neighbours' (quote the well-tattooed, excitingly artsy platform2 worker running my workshop). I can't honestly say, but I c...

Hugging Kenyan Trees: June 2010

http://www.huggingkenyantrees.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Saturday, 26 June 2010. Hierarchies and Culture Shock. Sorry for the delay in posting: it's been a refreshingly active week, with many different tales to tell! Prayers and wishes that I escape would be wonderful, please! Where are their husbands all day? In other news, we did a sports day at Kia Miriru school on Wednesday. Everyone got involved and I thoroughly enjoyed the change in work - we'll be going back there again! I soon had them all doing the Hokey Kokey, which went down very well and was done m...

Hugging Kenyan Trees: May 2010

http://www.huggingkenyantrees.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Monday, 31 May 2010. The Visit of a lifetime and another day in Zambezi. A very hot, dusty hello :). This next part is going to be (probably lengthy) excerpts from yesterday's journal entry, since our visit to the Kibera slum was the most shocking, hard-hitting, harrowing yet amazing, inspiring and heart-warming experience of my life. Yes, the feelings do require that many adjectives. and more! Kwaheri (goodbye) for now,. Saturday, 29 May 2010. Have been very keen to pick us up and the older men smile sw...

Hugging Kenyan Trees: Less hugging, more hacking...

http://www.huggingkenyantrees.blogspot.com/2010/06/less-hugging-more-hacking.html

Sunday, 13 June 2010. Less hugging, more hacking. Following on from my last post, it turns out those kids were wrong: 'kwega' is the response to 'muga' and means 'Hello, I'm fine'. It's about time I wrote something about the work here. We've had our first full week of it and, oh my, is it taxing! Don't panic, Mum and Dad, they've found him. Emotions are settling, with minimal frustration at African Time! I've been given the Kimeru name 'Kagwiria', which means 'always happy' :) Rather like it - considerin...

Hugging Kenyan Trees: Rains down in Africa

http://www.huggingkenyantrees.blogspot.com/2010/06/rains-down-in-africa.html

Wednesday, 16 June 2010. Rains down in Africa. With everything covered in an intensely foggy, misty rain, working in the forest wasn't an option today (we might get trampled unawares by hephalumps! This isn't a vegetarian rant, more a fair trade one). I soon learned, however, that KSH400 for a piece of matieral is NOT a good price and in fact bought it for 100. I'm getting there! I do love visiting Micki, Kayliegh and Nat at Arimi and Matilda's house. it's about 40mins uphill from me, but worth it! SUCH ...

Hugging Kenyan Trees: July 2010

http://www.huggingkenyantrees.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Friday, 16 July 2010. It's been a while. And I'm sorry about that! The reasons could be numerous and varied, but it's largely down to laziness and low spirits: I didn't want simply to rant about missing home and not liking it here! In fact, I do like it here. On days like today, that's easy to say! The sun's beating down without a cloud in the sky, as is the norm now, aaand. we're going on SAFARI tomorrow! This news has cheered everyone massively, after being resigned to Kenyan 'organisation'. Hooray!

Welcome | martincourt

https://martincourt.wordpress.com/welcome

Thanks for taking the time to look at my blog. This is an attempt to follow the journey through my first sabbatical, an idea I used to scoff at but of which I am beginning to see the sense! After 23 years of ordained ministry in the Church of England, all of it in the Diocese of Leicester, and following a foray with chronic illness, the time has come to take stock and grasp this opportunity to focus once more on that which I believe God has invited me to do. This blog is an attempt to follow my sabbatical and who knows where it may go from there…. I am an Anglican priest of the traditional Catholic flavour, a Benedictine Oblate. A husband, dad, birder and aspiring bass player (probably in that order). I have served my ordained life in the Diocese of Leicester. In five different parishes and am currently Vicar of Scraptoft. And Priest-in-Charge of St Chad, Leicester. Before ordination I studied ‘cello at the Royal Northern College of Music.
