2008 is quickly coming to a close, and it would be an absolute understatement to say it was quite a memorable year for China (both good and bad):. A roaring applause follows, and that was the end of my attempt at a stimulating discussion. . Also, after the tactless CNN commentator called Chinese leaders "goons and thugs," "Don't be so CNN" became a common saying in China to describe Western media bias. 160;Is it wrong to think I want to live? 160;Made me rethink the role of a teacher. Test = fun, Part 2. Temple of Literature, one of the only pieces of Vietnamese architecture standing in the city. Ho Chi Minh Museum - By far the most cooky museum I have ever been to. An attempt at combining history museum with modern art. Really bizarre. Some French colonial architecture. Chaos of what is Hanoi traffic, only the picture doesn't even capture 10% of it. The infamous Hanoi Hilton. New friends - Rose from Britain, Tristae from Iceland, Marco from Switzerland. Test = fun, Part 1. Every sch...

I Don’t Know Enough Chinese to be Punny. A Little Bit About Me. Forward, Not Backward. October 11, 2012. I watch an American foreign policy engaged in a tug-of-war between trying to cling to a past where America called the shots and everyone else stood at attention (case in point, see Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s Wall Street Journal op-ed on U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East published on October 1st. On FPcom responding to Mitt’s op-ed is spot-on when he writes:. Naoko in the PRC.

A couple of pictures from post-community service fun in Chengdu. At the Chengdu Panda Base - cutest laziest animals ever. At Wuhouci, shrine made in honor of Zhuge Liang - 出师未捷身先死,长使英雄泪满襟. Wendell and Alex, in the form of Sichuan opera-masked men. Carol, inside Du Fu's thatched cottage compound. Serve the people - 为人民服务. This picture of my teaching partner Carol, on the bus ride back from Pengzhou to Chengdu, says it all - the two of us are exhausted. On our way there, . Our students did an absolutely fa...

Winter travels - Part 3. 2/2-2/8 - Thailand (Raileh Beach - Krabi). I'm not a beach person, but curiosity got the best of me - since I would never make a separate trip for this, I decided to tack on a trip to the beaches of Thailand. Absolutely beautiful, but I am utterly incapable of doing nothing on vacation - got very antsy by the end of my four day stay. Went snorkeling for the first time - coolest thing ever. Also did some pretty intense hikes of sorts. Winter travels - Part 2. With my vacation ov...

Further into space and beyond. Walked into 7th period class today to see that all the students were glued to the projector screen. They were broadcasting China's first spacewalk. And to my surprise, the school was allowing the students to watch! 160;Thunderous applause when the astronaut entered space. Thunderous applause when he waved to his fellow citizens. Thunderous applause when he grabbed the Chinese flag and raised it in triumph. Went to former Yali ELI Josh Hill's wedding banquet today - he wa...
