Since the introduction of the BCAR Section S for Small Light Aeroplanes in 1985 there have been no new 3 axis microlights of British manufacture or design even taken to the very rigourous test stage. It is my contention that the Authorities can't (or won't) cope with anything new, they need a production status aircraft with history before they will even consider looking at it. My first attempt at my own design was a two seat all flying canard called the Iolaire.

The Quaich is a single seat all composite, high wing, tail dragger aircraft suitable for home construction. A PDF of drawings (800KB). You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. These are calculated figures based on the above moderate assumptions and will improve if take off weight is lower.

Sgian Dubh

The Sgian Dubh is desinged to be an affordable, safe and comfortable aircraft which can be constructed without the use of specialist skills or equipment. A PDF of drawings (3.5MB, 8mins @56Kbps). The Sgian Dubh prop was made more like a paddle to increase the ground clearance on landing and taking off. Peak revs on the ground was 6,200 rpm:. The Iolaire prop was for a BMW 100RS; was quiet, worked well and I limited the rpm to 4000:. The single bladed prop was an experimental one in 1984, was quiet but a thin but broader anti vortex tip improved the range, this was also very quiet:.
