Rebuilding steel bikes from the bike boom era.mostly. Sunday, August 16, 2015. A confession and some Miscellaneous stuff. The bike is ready but is the rider? My haul and a soft bike rack. The local yarn vandals has thoughtfully knitted a bike rack cozy so I didn't even need to think about my paint getting scratched while my bike was locked up. And I did indeed find an abundance of reasonably priced organic produce including some yummy raspberries. Reflecting on a successful ride. The old -dusty and worn.

On The Rode Again. So Many Bikes, So Little Time. Monday, September 26, 2011. Open Road was the store brand for Montgomery Ward back in the days when many stores sold bikes under their own brand name. A search of the web finds a dearth of information so there is little history available for this bike. Head Badge on Open Road Mixte. Made in Korea" at bottom of seat tube. Stamping on Bottom Bracket. The pictures above show all the identifying marks I could find. Does anyone have any clues? The brakes were ...

On The Rode Again. So Many Bikes, So Little Time. Wednesday, August 31, 2011. I've been riding a lot this summer and am currently working on a second century in mid September, but I have also been working on project bikes along the way. One is this 1989 Schwinn Caliente that I came across. The 1989 Schwinn Caliente was their entry level road bike for that year. It's a basic 10 speed with all entry level components. Factory Specs on the 1989 Caliente. On the rack, ready to be disassembled. Thanks to the g...

On The Rode Again. So Many Bikes, So Little Time. Thursday, July 28, 2011. Ride, Ride, Ride. I've been remiss in keeping this blog updated. I really haven't been spending any time working on bikes because the weather has been so hot and the garage/shop is like an oven. Here are some pictures from the day of the event:. On The Rode Again. So Many Bikes, So Little Time. Friday, November 11, 2011. Shimano Positron Indexed Shifting. In my last post I promised some information on the Shimano Positron Indexed Shifting System that came with my recently refurbished Open Road Mixte. This is purportedly Shimano's first attempt at indexed shifting and was developed in several iterations, all of which operated in a similar fashion. The Open Road Mixte came with the Positron FH rear derailleur as pictured below: (click to enlarge).

On The Rode Again. So Many Bikes, So Little Time. Thursday, March 31, 2011. 1985 Schwinn Traveler Maxed Out. Part of my personal philosophy is that we're all here to make the world a better place when we leave it than it was when we entered it, and it's up to us to decide how we fulfill that obligation. One of the great things about the human condition is that there are an endless variety of ways we can express ourselves and leave our mark. Still, it was a great find and was exactly what I was looking fo...

Rebuilding steel bikes from the bike boom era.mostly. Friday, January 18, 2013. 1974 Peugeot UO-8 Blue (November 2011). 500 (Frame-set plus a few parts). Once upon a time there was a frame-set, languishing in the corner of the local bike co-op, when the amateur 10 speed refurbisher asked “How much for the tall Peugeot frame”. The wrench said “5 bucks, please. Take it I am sick. Of looking at it! Nd thus another frame-set rebuild made its way into my hands . If you are smart you get a complete. French bik...

Rebuilding steel bikes from the bike boom era.mostly. Sunday, August 31, 2014. 1977 Raleigh Record LTD Mixte- Campus bike rebuild Part III-fixing issues. When I left this series I had encountered a problem or two, or five. As you can see above the bike is starting to look like, well a bike. It has a ways to go, however, I feel like I am in sight of the home stretch, but lets talk about how I got here. Now I have enough room to tighten it! And it made me think that might be an option because of the adjust...
