Huguenard, Ph.D. We are interested in the neuronal mechanisms that underlie synchronous oscillatory activity in the thalamus, cortex and the massively interconnected thalamocortical system. Such oscillations are related to cognitive processes, normal sleep activities and certain forms of epilepsy. Denizens of the huguenard lab. My research focuses on understanding the role of voltage-gated sodium channels in epilepsy with a particular emphasis on determining how mutations in sodium channel genes can alter thalamocortical activity. To this end, I am applying slice physiology, two photon imaging, and optogenetics to examine this question at the synaptic, cellular, and circuit levels. I am an avid zymurgist.
