Fred's Humboldt Blog: Water Bills Going Up?
http://humboldtlib.blogspot.com/2015/08/water-bills-going-up.html
Tuesday, August 04, 2015. Water Bills Going Up? Probably not here, is my guess, but Calwatchdog looks at water bills. Going up elsewhere in the state. This, the result of people cutting back on their water use. Less water used means less revenue for the water suppliers so they have to raise rates to keep going. Will the water bills of those of us in the Humboldt Municipal Water District go up if people up here really started cutting back? Posted by Fred Mangels @ 2:31 PM. Eureka, California, United States.

Fred's Humboldt Blog: Support for Book Bans Growing?
http://humboldtlib.blogspot.com/2015/08/support-for-book-bans-growing.html
Monday, August 03, 2015. Support for Book Bans Growing? Looks at recent polls asking whether people believe certain books should be banned. The percentage believing there should be has increased from 18% in 2011 to 28% more recently. That may not seem too bad as 28% is barely over a quarter of those surveyed, but the percentages get higher as some questions got more specific. I'll expect percentages to grow (at least in California) as we advance our totalitarian state. Posted by Fred Mangels @ 7:50 AM.

Fred's Humboldt Blog: Recycling Trivia
http://humboldtlib.blogspot.com/2015/05/recycling-trivia.html
Monday, May 18, 2015. I went to the City Garbage recycling center yesterday and took these along. They're used more and more to replace styrofoam for packing things nowadays. I've always wondered if they were recyclable. Same as those fiber type egg cartons. I think they're made out of generally the same stuff. Posted by Fred Mangels @ 6:35 AM. Fred's Humboldt Blog: Changes in the Science of Cholesterol
http://humboldtlib.blogspot.com/2015/08/changes-in-science-of-cholesterol.html
Thursday, August 06, 2015. Changes in the Science of Cholesterol. Looks at recent changes in health official's views on cholesterol. After 40 years of warnings, they're beginning to think it's not so bad after all. I've been hearing bits and pieces along that line for years. The article goes into the various reasons for scientific opinion. In other words, science is rarely settled. Who knows? Maybe 20 years from now they'll be telling us again that cholesterol is bad for us. Most athletes food intake (ca...

http://humboldtlib.blogspot.com/2015/08/letter-more-old-town-parking-needed.html
Saturday, August 08, 2015. Letter: More Old Town Parking Needed. I guess our very own Julie Timmons isn't alone in wanting more parking in Eureka's Old Town. A letter in the Times- Standard. Suggests turning the area on First Street, between C and F into a parking lot. It makes no difference to me. I've never had a problem parking in Old Town. Then again, I rarely go down there. Fred's Humboldt Blog: I Like Charles Koch
http://humboldtlib.blogspot.com/2015/08/i-like-charles-koch.html
Wednesday, August 05, 2015. I Like Charles Koch. I've been reading lots of stuff on billionaire Charles Koch recently. Yesterday the Washington Post had an interview with him and the head of the United Negro (gasp! College Fund. The two are friends, with some political differences to be sure. The Washington Post. Has another short interview with him today. He considers himself a classic liberal. So why does he seem to still support Republicans? Posted by Fred Mangels @ 2:49 PM. Yes, Chaz Koch is the rich...

Fred's Humboldt Blog: Eureka Bails On Chamber of Commerce
http://humboldtlib.blogspot.com/2015/08/eureka-bails-on-chamber-of-commerce.html
Thursday, August 06, 2015. Eureka Bails On Chamber of Commerce. The North Coast Journal. Is the first I've heard that the City of Eureka will stop funding its Chamber of Commerce as of July 1 of next year. They got a 20% cut in funding as of July 1 this year. The Left should be happy as they've been complaining about Chamber funding for at least a couple years. Posted by Fred Mangels @ 8:11 AM. Let the Humboldt Convention and Visitors Bureau receive public funding for marketing purposes. If the Chamb...

Fred's Humboldt Blog: Dengler On "The Big One"
http://humboldtlib.blogspot.com/2015/08/dengler-on-big-one.html
Sunday, August 02, 2015. Dengler On "The Big One". I didn't read the New Yorker article that HSU earthquake gal, Lori Dengler, comments on. But she still makes a point in cutting through the media hype over The Big One- the big earthquake supposedly just around the corner:. A Cascadia rupture is not 'long overdue.' We don’t have a good enough or long enough record of past earthquakes to define the pattern of occurrence.". Posted by Fred Mangels @ 8:18 AM. The New Yorker article was good but not news.

Fred's Humboldt Blog: Shopping Cart Misuse
http://humboldtlib.blogspot.com/2015/08/shopping-cart-misuse.html
Sunday, August 09, 2015. I've mentioned shopping cart misuse here before. For instance, the guy and his wife cluttering up the check out line at Winco with a shopping cart that only held a gallon of milk. This time it's a rant mostly because I didn't have the guts to say something to the girl who is the target. I finish my shopping. I go to the checkout and, lo and behold, the same girl moves in right behind me with her shopping cart. What does she have in it? Posted by Fred Mangels @ 11:47 AM. Please do...
