Hunger and Sauce: October 2012

http://hungerandsauce.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 24 October 2012. Fish fingers and salty air. What better way to spend a day than messing about on the sea with er, a fishing rod and a dozen men? I've been a bit preoccupied by the onset of Autumn and the incredible spectrum of mushrooms that have popped up over the last few weeks. Too busy to blog about my fishing trip I'm afraid, until now. Good points: It was a beautifully clear, sunny day, with barely a whisper of movement on the water. No seasickness then. And we caught some fish&...After...

Hunger and Sauce: September 2012

http://hungerandsauce.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, 20 September 2012. Sloe gin summer puddings. Nothing says summer like a sharp-and-sweet fruit pudding so these are something of a last hurrah for the Indian summer that graced our fair city last week, fading so quickly now as the days get shorter. Someone (not me) has switched on the heating in our house, and I have finally been forced to rootle out my leather gloves for that first icy hour on the way to work. SLOE GIN SUMMER PUDDINGS. 8 slices of fresh white bread, no thicker than 8-10mm.

Hunger and Sauce: November 2012

http://hungerandsauce.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, 8 November 2012. I'm particularly pleased about sharing this recipe with you because it's one which appears in a new publication! An illustrator friend invited me to contribute a food column to her just-launched children's newspaper, The LOOP. I've started with a safe bet - cakes. And I like the idea of making an unfamiliar subject more understandable, perhaps introducing a new ingredient or technique in each issue. So this week, tamarind. Hunger and Sauce: March 2012

http://hungerandsauce.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, 22 March 2012. What strange, wrinkly creature is this? May I introduce kodampuli, an extra special gift brought back from Kerala by a very sweet, thoughtful friend. She knows I love a mystery ingredient! Labels: Food - savoury - fish. Tuesday, 20 March 2012. Sour cherry and hazelnut florentines. These are based on an old recipe my mum used to make many, many years ago. I love florentines so it was rather frustrating when the recipe disappeared for a decade, during which time I tried other v...

Designer Dishes: Banana oat muffins

http://designerdishes.blogspot.com/2012/09/banana-oat-muffins.html

Thursday, 6 September 2012. Sometimes, the need for something sweet just cannot be avoided. I try to side step it; dodge the craving for doughnuts, persuade myself that a juicy apple will satisfy my craving, but that only works for so long. 125g (gluten free) porridge oats. 140g low fat yoghurt/fromage frais. 1 banana, mashed. Preheat the oven to 200C and use a dab of oil to grease a muffin tin or silicon cupcake moulds. And springy to the touch. Serve plain or split with a little butter.

Designer Dishes: December 2011

http://designerdishes.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Saturday, 31 December 2011. Snapshot: Christmas is over. Into the bargain bin go the mince pies, brandy cream and fruit cake. No more brandy truffles or turkey until next year. But no need to be sad! You can stock up on Easter eggs instead. It's not even 2012 yet! Thursday, 15 December 2011. Takeaway's to save drunken Londoners. Their research shows that. A quarter of accidental house fires in the capital are caused by 18 to 35 year olds when attempting to cook at home when drunk. The Christmas season is...

Designer Dishes: Barbecued butterflied salmon

http://designerdishes.blogspot.com/2012/05/barbecued-butterflied-salmon.html

Friday, 18 May 2012. The Boy has always said "Never trust a thin chef" and he seems to follow a similar logic for bushmen. Since I got to know him, I know that I've been wrestling with a rather hefty draw for his affections. He totally loves Ray Mears. His logic is that Ray, with his generous waist line, is not simply surviving in the wilderness but properly living. After removing the fins and scoring around the head, he gently plied the bones away from the flesh and – voila! Slice just behind the gills;...

Designer Dishes: Broccoli & Feta Potato bake

http://designerdishes.blogspot.com/2012/06/broccoli-feta-potato-bake.html

Thursday, 21 June 2012. Broccoli and Feta Potato bake. What a grim day! What happened to (the increasingly lesser spotted) Summer season? I'm certain that I haven't slept through it because I'm definitely not that well rested. Regrettably. So it can be a super thrify meal too. I'm partial to a little ham or bacon thrown in but it's also delicious without if you're going meatless. Broccoli and Feta Potato bake. 300g new potatoes (or leftover cooked potatoes). 1 large head of broccoli. Preheat the oven to ...

Designer Dishes: November 2011

http://designerdishes.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 30 November 2011. Review: Cucina Rustica, Birmingham. Love was in the air and The Boy and I were searching for an impromptu late night meal on a journey up North. Our rendez-vous? Birmingham. Not the most inspiring of romantic settings, admittedly. It’s not exactly our home turf either so, as the train plodded its way from London to Brum, I frantically tapped away on Tripadvisor. Or so it seemed. I was keen to share a scallop starter involving parsnip mash, which I’d spied other diners e...

Saturday, 14 July 2012. Review: Le Mercury, Islington, London. Simple, affordable food can be found at Le Mercury, a lovely no-frills French bistro in Islington. My sister, who has recently returned from a year of study in Copenhagen, was in town and we were keen to get some tasty grub that would satisfy without breaking the bank. Le Mercury would be ideal for a slap up family meal or get together with friends. The prompt, unobtrusive service could make it a winner for a quiet dinner date too. We...Tasty...

Designer Dishes: August 2011

http://designerdishes.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 30 August 2011. Succulent Baked Plaice with Olives. Plaice isn’t necessarily the prettiest of fish. As a flat fish, it can look (as the name suggests…) a little squished and it’s dull grey skin with violent orange spots wouldn’t be a great advert for the latest face cream. Despite the fact that it won’t be winning any beauty pageants any time soon, it is totally delicious and a great base for flavours. Succulent Baked Plaice with olives. 1 handful of parsley or dill (or a mixture). To serve, cut...

It's not often that I attempt a 'showstopper' cake - expectations are always high, and I don't really go for coloured frostings or those hard little silver balls that break your teeth. Hunger and Thirst | Man shall not live by bread alone

Man shall not live by bread alone. From Strength to Strength. March 1, 2018 by Mike. What a picture of our own pilgrimage toward God. From strength to strength, whether from Sunday message to Sunday message or our own daily time with God, in them we get what we need to keep us going. Can you imagine trekking through the desert and passing up these pools? Or making the journey at a time when the pools would not be there? February 25, 2018 by Mike. Do you ever wonder if you have just conjured it all up?
