Hungry Gardener in DC

Hungry Gardener in DC. Tuesday, March 31, 2009. The weather forecast does not look promising for tilling this weekend. Forecasted rain on Wednesday and Thursday will leave my garden to wet for tilling. I have already laid down extra compost and lime two weekends ago. I think I may have missed the March dry "sweet spot" for tilling and planting spring crops. Monday, February 25, 2008. Lead and Soil Testing. The University of Minnesota's Extension service has a good article that can be found here. So I am ...

Hungry Gardener in DC: February 2008

http://hungrygardener.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Hungry Gardener in DC. Monday, February 25, 2008. Lead and Soil Testing. I had always heard that soil-testing was a good idea to improve the overall harvest, but I became motivated to actually do this when I heard that urban gardens may be more suspectible to lead contamination. Although the risk is relatively low, it suddenly seemed like a good idea to actually know what my ph level was because lead contamination is less likely to occur above 6.5 ph. Lead Contamination and Gardens. I can't believe that ...

Hungry Gardener in DC: DIY grow light system vs kit in small spaces

http://hungrygardener.blogspot.com/2008/02/diy-grow-light-system-vs-kit-in-small.html

Hungry Gardener in DC. Monday, February 25, 2008. DIY grow light system vs kit in small spaces. So I am going to be a little less thrifty when it comes to my grow-light system. Sometimes living in a smaller space means that the economies of scale from purchasing 10 - 4ft bulbs all at once are just not possible. The model that I am going to try can be purchased Amazon.com. 2ft Hydrofarm Grow light System. I'm interested in buying the grow light you mentioned - how did it work? Would you recommend it?

Hungry Gardener in DC: August 2007

http://hungrygardener.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html

Hungry Gardener in DC. Monday, August 20, 2007. An ode to southern vegetables. There are times when I wish DC was a bit further north. A little less burning sun might prevent my tomatoes from dropping their fruit when they get too hot (see explanation under Chicago Gardener. And might just convince my eggplants that they didn't need to put all the energy into producing leaves. Is the butter bean a lima bean? The first and official butterbean festival says . Eat My Garden: Potted beans

http://eatmygarden.blogspot.com/2007/06/potted-beans.html

Saturday, June 23, 2007. The beans have grown 3 new sets of leaves since I potted them. This picture is actually from 2 days ago). They are a little over 15 cm (6 inches) tall, so I'm supposed to "earth them up". I'm just gonna add some soil to the pots and hope that's what "earthing up" means. Eat My Garden: Potting

http://eatmygarden.blogspot.com/2007/06/potting.html

Wednesday, June 13, 2007. This is what my beans and lentils looked like yesterday morning. Poor things were really crowded! You can't see the lentils on the right so clearly, but believe, it was getting bad). The thing is I've been so busy with college that I didn't have time or energy to go get some small stones to put on the bottom of the pots to help with the drainage. I kept saying "I'll do it tomorrow". Yesterday I finally did it! June 18, 2008 at 3:19 AM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A blog ...

Eat My Garden: Mini corncob?

http://eatmygarden.blogspot.com/2007/06/mini-corncob.html

Saturday, June 16, 2007. This thing literally came up overnight! Is it a corncob? Does it mean it's been pollinated? After some research, I've realized that is not a corncob :(. Shows, corncobs actually come from the side of the plant. So this thing coming from my corn is the baby version of the golden stick thingies (nice vocabulary! That you can see in tomsch picture. Eat My Garden: Sunflower progress in pictures

http://eatmygarden.blogspot.com/2007/06/sunflower-progress-in-pictures.html

Sunday, June 24, 2007. Sunflower progress in pictures. The two sunflowers I planted have been extremely nice. I haven't given them the space they technically need, and they're growing in plastic bottles (which can't be too comfy, can it? But they are growing fast and look beautiful. I would reeeaallly like for them to start making the flower. I don't have high hopes. but it would be awesome! I really love that you're growing all of this on a balcony in the middle of a city! Eat My Garden: Garden under attack!

http://eatmygarden.blogspot.com/2007/06/garden-under-attack.html

Thursday, June 28, 2007. My leaves have holes on them! They are on the bean plants, tomato plants, sunflowers, even in the mint! Evidently I'm facing an enemy with a big appetite! This is the main suspect at the time. I found 5 of them hiding under bean and tomato plants leaves (needless to say, I helped them move on to their next life). I'll keep on checking on the plants to catch these little buggers before they do too much damage or become bigger. Any advice? July 5, 2007 at 9:25 AM. Hi,I'm also a new...

Eat My Garden: New plant

http://eatmygarden.blogspot.com/2007/06/new-plant.html

Monday, June 18, 2007. This morning I walked by a store selling strawberry plants and I just couldn't resist! They were only 3 euros each, and looked much better than my plant. I feel like I'm being somewhat unfaithful to my older plant. :P. Hey Sofia, you have a great site. I try to check it every day! Exciting to see what's.up! June 19, 2007 at 6:14 PM.
