The passion of a hunter's heart burns bright 365 days of the year. October 1, 2013. Ringside Seat for September’s Big Early Bird Show. I must admit, my early morning seat felt a little bit out of place. After all, a heavily camouflaged waterfowl layout blind – something I’m entirely familiar with in December and January – is a bit of an unusual hide for a September wingshooter in North Texas. Unlike the usual September fare of mourning doves and early teal, on this particular morning, the hopes of Pottsb...

The passion of a hunter's heart burns bright 365 days of the year. January 6, 2011. A Dad, a Son, and a Smile Made of Green. For most duck hunters and I’m one of them green is everything. As in the iridescent green of mallard drakes, greenheads as they are affectionately known by legions of duck hunters who covet their aerial presence over a decoy spread. Few things make a boy smile more than bagging his first greenhead. Above, Zach Burkhead shows off his first mallard drake taken on a recent hunt. Years...

The passion of a hunter's heart burns bright 365 days of the year. December 31, 2010. DEC 31, 2010 — They say that all good things must come to an end. Whether that is true or not, I don’t know. But I do know that one of the best things to happen in the last 30 years to the world of fishing and hunting communication is coming to an end. Tonight, on Dec. 31, 2010, as the big ball drops in Times Square and the official clock switches over from 11:59:59 to the stroke of midnight. A seat for the final decade...

The passion of a hunter's heart burns bright 365 days of the year. January 20, 2011. The Insanity of Late Season Duck Hunting. Robert Ruark, from. You Got to be Crazy to be a Duck Hunter. From the book The Old Man and the Boy. In the outdoors realm, there are few things more disconcerting than sinking a warm, dry socked foot into a pair of frigid chest waders. A set of waders that suddenly reminds you that one boot foot in particular took on enough water during your last hunt to sink the Titanic. All the...

Sunday, October 2, 2011. SYC Deer Hunt 2011. The first morning in the stand turned out to be a good one. We saw a total of 7 deer, all does and fawns, and Logan was able to harvest a nice doe. This was Logan's first deer, and it was great that he and his dad were able to share the moment together. The biggest buck of the weekend was shot by a young man named Graham who bagged this really nice 10-point! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Become a Fan on Facebook. Rob's Hunting Journal. Rob's Hunting Journal: June 2011
http://robshuntingjournal.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, June 5, 2011. Earlier this spring I found a unique deer antler while I was shed hunting. It is a very non-typical and heavy antler with lots of character. But, it looked like it had been laying out in the weather for a couple years and it was bleached completely white. I used a fresh antler as reference and tried to make the base of the antler darker and fade it into a slightly lighter color toward the end. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Become a Fan on Facebook. Monday, February 28, 2011. First Fresh Shed Antler of the Year. I've been out shed hunting a few times already this year and have found a number of old antlers from previous years that were faded and chalky. But last week I managed to find a really nice fresh one that had just recently dropped. But what did the other side look like? Take a look at that drop-tine! Sunday, February 27, 2011. A few weeks back we had some winter weather arrive here in North Texas. We had some icy road conditions topped o...

Sunday, April 17, 2011. European Mount Desktop Pedestal. After making the turkey fan display plaque last week I thought of another item to make using my wood router. I have a nice whitetail skull I want to put on display so I decided to build a desktop piece that the skull could sit on. After cutting and sanding I used the wood router to create the decorative edge on the base and the panel. Then I stained the wood using a red mahogany stain and darkened it up a little bit with some dark walnut stain.

Just another WordPress.com site. April 16, 2013. Taming Bitter Arugula with Pasta, Sausage and Mushrooms. This is one of my favorite mostly-easy dishes to make. It’s relatively fast (depending how good you are at chopping and how much you want to throw in) and very flexible. I’m not normally a huge pasta fan, but every once in a while I get in the mood to make this. So what I ended up with was a slightly more vinegar-y version of my normal recipe, but it tasted pretty good. 1-2 Tbsp olive oil. Cup parmes...
