It is only 4pm, but we (Andy Dettling, Laurent Fournier, Jacco Gelderloos) have been up for about 14 hours, and biked and hiked for about 75 miles, smashing our own previous Washtenaw county (Michigan) bigby (=carbon free) record of 114 species. Good Bins, specially for the price, $270 I bought 3 years ago. The kind of bins I can afford to buy, more important, the kind of bins I can afford to lose or bang on a tree during a run (yeah, I run and bird at the same time). So, thumbs up to Nikon! Birding Adventures in Washtenaw County and Michigan. Monday, August 31, 2009. No birding last week end. I wish I could have, but honestly. A 2 days week end per week seems to be a good 4-5 day short of what I need to rest, take care of my family, staying in good shape (I try to hit the gym 3 times a week), and go birding. But the good news is next week end we will go for a short 2 days trip at pointe. Even without birding, I was able to add a new backyard (and county! That was a yellow-bellied flycatcher.

My ebird ranking has been slipping slowly but surely out of the top 100 for the state of Michigan, and I can foresee a time where I could be out of the top 100 for my own county too. But I have a plan. That site is Harrisville State Park. That site is that good, that a single birder has been able to reach the top 10 of the ebird patch ranking. Northern Gannet, Artic Tern, Bewick's Wren.

Virginia Big Year 2016. Thursday, March 29, 2012. This morning I decided to head out to Shenandoah River State Park in the hopes of finding a drumming Ruffed Grouse. While this search was unsuccessful I still had a very good morning. There was a flock of Golden-crowned and singing Ruby-crowned Kinglets at the picnic area and I saw this Louisiana Waterthrush along a nearby creek. As I was walking along the Cottonwood Trail I was surprised to see this Black Rat Snake coming out of a hole in a juniper!

Virginia Big Year 2016. Friday, May 17, 2013. Birding the Point Pelee Area. This morning Karl Overman and I crossed the border into Ontario to bird Point Pelee National Park and the surrounding area. Today was not one of the best days for Pelee but we still managed 20 species of warblers including these three. Virginia Big Year 2016. Sunday, January 30, 2011. On Friday, I went to see the Green-tailed Towhee in Bloomfield. After fifteen minutes it came out of the bushes for about five minutes. It was great to see such a rare bird in my home county of Oakland. I took a few very bad pictures. Virginia Big Year 2016. Saturday, January 28, 2012. Today I drove up to Pennsylvania to see a Townsend's Warbler (lifer #391) that has been visiting a feeder for the past week or so. I arrived at 8:45 and within 15 minutes the warbler visited the feeder. I had to wait almost an hour, however, before I was finally able to get some decent photos. Virginia Big Year 2016. Wednesday, March 21, 2012. They got excited and started calling and soon 8 birds flew off and landed in a tree across the street. I ran back to my car to go after them but then four more birds flew in from the opposite direction! I was able to get a few good shots of them here.
