True, he did consciously try to embody the idea of the 'Christian' explorer, wandering naked and hungry through the New World. (Surprisingly, the building of churches and conversion of Native peoples appears as an afterthought toward the end of the work.) At one point, Cabeza de Vaca presents himself as a Christ-like figure, healing the sick by the grace of God. Fact or fiction? I tend to go with the latter.
