Life: when this is about that. Sunday, July 31, 2011. Summer comes to an end. Summer comes to an end for one of us tomorrow. Our baby starts middle school tomorrow! Yup, he’s in 6. Grade Our base school is year-round, so he’ll be in school 9 weeks on then three weeks off. So it’s big changes all around for Jack – middle school, year-round calendar, and a 7:30am start time. Yikes! I’ll most definitely do the traditional first-day-of-school photo at the crack of dawn tomorrow. Sunday, July 10, 2011. The sh...

Life: when this is about that. Friday, January 27, 2012. Just a little visit to China. At the beginning of 2012, Dave and I had the opportunity to travel to China. Why China? Lots of people have asked us that. I say, why not? We’d never been there. Oh, and so we could see our friends, Karel and Lori. They left our community about 18 months ago to settle down in East Asia. Currently they are studying Mandarin while living in Dalian, in the Northeast province. They introduced us to all kinds of food. N...

Life: when this is about that. Saturday, March 3, 2012. The Project that Never Ends. Yes, it goes on and on my friends. But we completed one more step in the patio project that has been going on for almost two years now. I've been blogging about our project along the way. After ripping out a deck, repairing rot along the house, cutting down some very tall trees, re-grading part of the back yard, and laying our patio, we are ready for the final phase. In April we'll be on to the next phase . planting!

Life: when this is about that. Saturday, February 4, 2012. Advocacy and Letting Go. This folder represents almost. 7 years of IEPs for Sam. (Individual Education Plans – for those of you not savvy in the education lingo. IEPs are drawn up for kids who have disabilities - whether physical, learning, developmental or otherwise - that might interfere with their learning in the standard classroom and/or standard mode of instruction.). It’s just weird to think about that. The thick file pictured above has a p...

Life: when this is about that. Sunday, March 18, 2012. Two years ago I blogged about our idea for a family senior trip. For each of our children. Well, tonight we are one step closer to Sam’s. Senior trip. The hotel is booked and after much searching, tickets for a special evening have been purchased. Where are we going? Well it’s Sam’s choice. Saturday, March 3, 2012. The Project that Never Ends. Yes, it goes on and on my friends. I've been blogging about our project along the way. The shenanigans of a ...

Life: when this is about that. Sunday, April 17, 2011. An Evening to Remember. Thursday evening we got all gussied up and headed out to the Carolina Country Club. We didn’t know quite what to expect. All we knew was that Sam had written an essay for his math teacher. A couple of weeks ago she told him he had won a contest and there would be a banquet honoring the essay winners. Eventually we heard this contest was sponsored by the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Checking out the country club. The rest of us just...

Life: when this is about that. Wednesday, September 28, 2011. Life as a Mom of an Aspergian. As many of you know, our second-born has Asperger’s. I don’t blog about it much, mostly because I haven’t wanted to blab it all over the web that Sam has Asperger’s. But recently he started his own blog. So I figure since it’s out there, it’s open season for me to give some perspective on being a mom of someone with Asperger’s. He parked backwards in his space You know, so he could pull straight out when he left&...

Life: when this is about that. Sunday, April 15, 2012. Sam’s choice for his senor trip. Was New York City. We headed up to the Big Apple just before Easter. So what did you do in New York? We rode the subway and stood in lines. And somehow we squeezed in a few more things. Like a visit to Ellis Island where Sam and Jack search for any record of a handful of ancestral names that we knew from family stories. We did the Empire State Building at night. The 9/11 Memorial and paused to reflect. The sense that ...

Life: when this is about that. Thursday, May 3, 2012. It’s May and we’re in the final stretch. In August 2009, as we prepared for Chelsea’s senior year of high school, I was pretty sure that the school year would fly by and the months of August to June would pass in the blink of an eye. I was wrong. Very wrong. This time around I knew better. We buckled down last August and prepared for what we knew would be a roller coaster ride of activity and emotion during Sam’s senior year. And so we begin the month...

Life: when this is about that. Thursday, January 7, 2010. Our firstborn is a senior in high school. A couple of years ago, Dave and I were reflecting on where we are in life. Approaching the years where we send our kids out into the world, one by one. We talked about how we could finish the “at home” part of their lives well. So tonight we took the plunge and hit the “purchase” button online. And we leave in exactly two weeks. Can you guess where we’re going? January 7, 2010 at 9:44 PM.
