I've Read That

Opinions on and Reactions to Books. Wednesday, August 5, 2015. In an isolated Cornish fishing village, there are forces of good and evil at work, and those who dare desecrate the holy have reason to fear the dark. This was an interesting one- not especially scary. In contrast, the parts about the narrator's youth in the village were pleasant reading. They feel so genuine that I think they must be based at least partly on Benson's own experiences and memories. The fact that I preferred this. This story wa...

I've Read That: March 2015

http://www.i-read-this.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Opinions on and Reactions to Books. Monday, March 23, 2015. Unscathed by the wars, Gervase Frant finally returns to his father's estate to claim his rightful title. Now he must establish himself as the new head of the house and ignore his family's rising hostility. First things first: I listened to an unabridged audiobook version of this novel (narrated by Cornelius Garret). This is only the second of Heyer's Regency novels that I've read (the first was Regency Buck. Also had a mystery. Maybe all. Of Hey...

I've Read That: November 2014

http://www.i-read-this.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Opinions on and Reactions to Books. Sunday, November 30, 2014. A professional medium who frequently supplements his genuine psychic abilities with trickery has an eye-opening experience. Eh, it was ok. Predictable, but ok. Beyond that, I haven't much to say. Well, here's one thing:. When you have a story that's so predictable and completely lacking in creepiness, there's not much to recommend it. I mean, it's a story. Friday, November 28, 2014. By Sarah Rees Brennan. Kami has lost the boy she loves, is t...

I've Read That: "The Horror-Horn"

http://www.i-read-this.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-horror-horn.html

Opinions on and Reactions to Books. Tuesday, August 4, 2015. While holidaying in the Alps, our narrator is treated to a hair-raising tale about Yeti-like creatures that live on a nearby peak- the Horror-Horn. Later on, he goes out by himself for a ski. Whatever could happen next? I'm not a Yeti aficionado- never cared for Bigfoot or "swamp/skunk apes", either- but this story was better than I'd expected. Recommended! It something symbolic about the female shape? Their very humanity was what made them so ...

I've Read That: January 2015

http://www.i-read-this.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Opinions on and Reactions to Books. Saturday, January 31, 2015. This was a shared read, so I don't have detailed notes.). This particular book was amusing, but not the best of the City Watch we've read so far. I found some of the social commentary/satire/whatever a little off-putting and heavy-handed, unfortunately. War, politics, and racism are not my favorite subjects for light, entertaining reading to begin with- and even worse, some of the jokes felt repetitive. I was disappointed that. When Lucy War...

I've Read That: April 2015

http://www.i-read-this.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Opinions on and Reactions to Books. Wednesday, April 29, 2015. A middle-aged Englishwoman returns home after spending years in India. Despite all appearances to the contrary, one of her neighbors is convinced that there's something sinister about the newcomer. My Reaction (with SPOILERS):. Though it's not remotely bone-chilling (from my jaded, modern perspective), this tale of an unusual vampire had a few shivery moments. She said. 'Your'e not going to curdle my blood at all.'". There were also a few of ...

Odds and Ends: December 2014

http://michael-oddsandends.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

This That. The Other. Friday, December 12, 2014. Scary Donald (and More! We recently bought a chainsaw, so Donald ordered some protective gear to wear while using it:. Luna wasn't too sure about that creepy helmet with the face shield. I've sniffed out a few more stinkhorn mushrooms since the first one, but so far, it's not too bad. Maybe we did a good job removing them last year, and this season won't be as stinky as feared! I'm not blogging here much, these days, as you may have noticed.

This That. The Other. Saturday, August 30, 2014. Major Pet Peeve: Just Report It! Dear local weathermen/women, anchors, etc.:. I know you're trying to put a personal touch on things, but please, just report the weather. Don't feel the need to subjectively judge every weather forecast. I'm so tired of hearing that, hey, it's great news! No rain for a week! Isn't it wonderful that the rain we were expecting today has shifted toward the west, so we'll only get scattered showers? Everyone hates rain, right?

http://michael-oddsandends.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

This That. The Other. Wednesday, November 26, 2014. This morning, at approximately 10:20 am (Eastern Standard Time), I smelled, located, and disposed of the first fully formed stinkhorn mushroom of the season. Now issuing BOLO for more of the same, in and around yard. This is not a test. I repeat, THIS IS NOT A TEST. All offending fungi should be approached and handled with utmost care and disposed of in a sealed garbage can. Be aware that touching the stinkhorn with bare flesh is extremely. Take down a ...

Odds and Ends: Planting and Moving Pots

http://michael-oddsandends.blogspot.com/2015/03/last-week-i-planted-bunch-of-things-mom.html

This That. The Other. Sunday, March 8, 2015. Planting and Moving Pots. Placing those plants has made me excited about the prospect of one or two other projects for the garden. For one thing, I'm gathering up stones from various piles around the yard. A small rock garden, maybe? Just off the back porch, beside the proposed site of a small patio. Below, photos from last week. Pink loropetalum, white loropetalum (witch-hazel), daffodils, camellia, Japanese magnolias, and periwinkle (variegated vinca).

Reactions to other people's reactions to "The News":. Americans are so dumb! NEWSFLASH: You're not going to die of Ebola! How come people only care about Ebola now that it's in the U.S? A Coastal Alabama Garden. Rural life on the gulf coast. Plants in Our Garden. Just for curiosity's sake. I'll try to remember to make a note of new additions as they come into the garden (and remove any that " depart. Plants in Our Garden (or Yard):. Some sort of pin oak? Can't recall. Has reddish leaves in autumn.). Japanese magnolias (a couple varieties). Crepe myrtles (several types, including 'Natchez', 'Victor', 'Tonto', and Black Diamond 'Pure White' and 'Red Hot'). A Coastal Alabama Garden. Rural life on the gulf coast. To Do: Winter 2016. If not sooner.). Mulch, mulch, mulch (if it's not all done already). Take delicate potted plants into warmer over-winter storage. Garage. House. Maybe porch, for some borderline plants. Winter-Sow- especially anything that needs cold, like perennial black-eyed Susans. Odds and Ends: Plant Wish List

http://michael-oddsandends.blogspot.com/p/plant-wish-list.html

This That. The Other. In no particular order. Sweet Olive (shrub/small tree). We sniffed one at Plantasia 2015 and considered buying it, but in the end decided not to. Now I wish we had! The scent was very pleasant- citric. We had some, at one point, but I think it petered out. I'd like to grow it again, sometime. I'm not sure what variety I want, but something non-invasive. I love the smell of honeysuckle, but the one that grows wild around here is too much of a pest to invite into the garden.

http://michael-oddsandends.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

This That. The Other. Wednesday, July 30, 2014. Garden Update (No Photos). I've been neglecting the garden/yard for a while, now. The weather this time of year. I just can't muster the will to get out there. It's miserable. If I made myself put on mosquito repellant and get out there very. Early, I could do a little every day. But I don't care enough, to tell the truth. Maybe next year? Maybe if the yard as a whole was in better condition? I just weeded and fertilized the pots of baby daylilies this morn...

The greatest river ever. Nov 10th, 2008 at 3:19 PM. There's a theory that during the glacials, the waters of all Siberian rivers, locked out from the Arctic Sea by the glaciers, were inverted to flow south. Through Aral Sea, Caspian Sea, Black Sea to Mediterranean. Thus creating probably the longest and largest river we've ever known. It also may explain why are there seals from the Caspian Sea to be found in Baikal, thousands of miles inland. Also, other interesting prehistoric lakes include:. Which mea...
