Aligning transit with development opportunities. Has come out with the observation that another transit investment has had only modest impact on real estate development. In spite of a rise in rents/prices, significant land use changes (like vertical development) have not occurred disproportionately along the Blue line in Minneapolis when compared to locations outside of the project's station areas. This comports with findings by Giuliano and Agarwal. Services can operate faster and with greater reliabili...
Does dedicated right of way make good, long-lasting transit? - Transit Oriented
http://www.transitoriented.com/blog/does-dedicated-right-of-way-make-good-long-lasting-transit
Does dedicated right of way make good, long-lasting transit? It's certainly hard to argue against the advantages of dedicated right of way for transit projects (except for the relative disadvantage of the cost. Services can operate faster and with greater reliability when interference is limited, particularly in highly congested places where automobile traffic can bring transit to a standstill. In a recent blog post at Next City. Steven Smith suggests that streetcars that survived. A blog by Ian Carlton.

Recently responded to Kaid Benfield. In a blog post. That provided a general statement about TOD. I thought it was worth noting here. I agree. TOD is idealistic and has been taken up as a rhetorical tool, one that hasn't lived up to the hype. Marohn suggests we should re-look at our transit investment philosophy so that we no longer rely on TOD to justify/bail out overbuilt transit projects. I appreciate the sentiment. Incremental development of land and transport allows for their co-evolution. H...This ...
When should cities hold out for better transit? - Transit Oriented
http://www.transitoriented.com/blog/when-should-cities-hold-out-for-better-transit
When should cities hold out for better transit? Stephen Smith at Next City. Recently put forward some evidence in a blog post about Zurich. So, should U.S. cities let the perfect be the enemy of the good? It's a tough call due to all the variables involved. Will the Federal Transit Administration write you off for decades because you cannot get your act together (for example, Detroit)? Will a better proposal come along? Will the political will ever emerge again? I could go on. A blog by Ian Carlton.
Transit Value Capture - Transit Value Capture
http://www.transitvaluecapture.com/blog/minnesota-value-capture-discussion-actually-thoughtful
Delivering Insights on Capturing the Value of Transit. Minnesota value capture discussion is actually thoughtful. Folks in Minnesota have been talking about new transportation funding sources. The conversation is at the state level and has included the use of localized value capture. The most interesting thing in my opinion is that thoughtful academic research is being relied upon to define the concepts to voters. Wow! Here's an example blog post. Special thanks to Burt Gregory at Mithun.

Delivering Insights on Capturing the Value of Transit. Take a transit quiz. Here's a fun TRANSIT QUIZ. Of the Washington Post. Can you name all 10 regions based only on the transit maps? Can you identify Chris's error in question #3? Extra credit for naming the cities that have used value capture extensively! Special thanks to Burt Gregory at Mithun. For permission to use the Portland Streetcar image above.
Transit Value Capture - Transit Value Capture

Delivering Insights on Capturing the Value of Transit. Value capture next best thing. David Levinson is a big fan of value capture and always good for a blog post reference every month. Well, the Transportationist has done it again in a recent blog post. Transit would be paid for by user fees. But given roads are not, this would result in there being very little transit, since fares would be very high, and users driven away. Still, these could be higher. This is nowhere to be seen. Why not?
