Fine Works in Wood
Ian Crosby: December 2010
http://iancrosby.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Fine Works in Wood. Sunday, December 12, 2010. Mock-up and wood selection. Finally I am sitting down to share this.I'm going to try to catch up on where this project is at over the next couple days, but for now some photos of the chair mock-up and a quick discussion about wood selection and part harvesting. No, the not-so Hobsonian lattice work won't be part of the look. I wonder if those window shade Bruce made are still in use? This is a negative template of the arms. It was handy because it gave m...

Fine Works in Wood. Wednesday, October 20, 2010. Some pics of my shop. I've been working in the shop now for a week and a half and needless to say I've been enjoying myself. The first couple days I was actually down there by 6:30 and the sound-proofing has been worth all the effort as my girls were still peacefully sleeping upstairs. My little 14" band-saw that has actually surprised me. I thought it would be the first thing needing to be replaced but it has been working quite nicely. Looking the other w...

Fine Works in Wood. Friday, September 25, 2009. Speedy Gonzalez, James Krenov and Wooden Planes. Our first couple weeks at the school have seen us all experience a lot of firsts.first real work bench, first time sharpening to a razor's edge, first time making a wooden plane and most importantly, first shavings with our new planes! This is the pieces that I cut to make my jointer plane ( light coloured Maple) and my coopering plane (darker, again Jatoba). We shaped the cross pins for our planes (the p...

Fine Works in Wood. Tuesday, April 27, 2010. This is a short foreign language film I made about weaving. Let me clarify that this is not a movie, but rather a film. Interestingly, I began at night (hence the beer) and finished the next morning (with a quick coffee.). The chairs are in their final stages now while I finalize a design for the table to go with them. We only have 12 working days left! Saturday, April 24, 2010. Starting to Wrap Up. Sunday, April 18, 2010. Wow this is my first interactive post.

Fine Works in Wood. Saturday, December 19, 2009. Beginnings of a Walnut Wall Cabinet. Knowing now, how big my cabinet is, it is shocking to see how big the planks were that I started with. These were the black walnut planks that Byron and I came back with from Vancouver after a day of adventure. We thought we had done well, and in some regards we did, but generally lumber yard selection is something that I still look forward to learning much more about. Pressure buttons and leveler holes are also drilled...

Barbara Shelton: January 2010

Tuesday, January 26, 2010. Some More Slow Progress. I had some trouble getting momentum back after Christmas break, but I am reaching the point where the finished piece doesn't seem too far off. After a few days of planing and flattening the back-panel it was glued in and work began on the frames for the glass doors. Frame members fixed and ready for glue. Poor unfinished cabinet collecting dust and feeling neglected. Junior (a classmate) was working on a new counter for the Gumboot Cafe that is next to ...

Friday, January 20, 2012. Except for being trapped behind a computer all day to generate the funds to be able to set up shop. Amazing how draining a desk job can be. There are issues letting go of off-cuts, even other people's. We were the benefactors of a friend's recent move to the opposite coast. A pile of local maple. More adopted wood and future kiln site. After so much time going by, rough milling some wood to make sawhorses was super exciting, and the more time I spend here the more my hands start...

Sunday, June 17, 2012. Finished the sister plane from a tulipwood blank I had at IP. I build the first little one for softening edges and other small tasks. This one is a gift for my sister who just accepted her first teaching position as a high school shop teacher. June 17, 2012 at 10:02 AM. Nice work, Barb. The perfect gift. ― Craig. Barbara Shelton: Upholstery
http://barbarashelton.blogspot.com/2011/09/upholstery.html
Sunday, September 25, 2011. I have been meaning to post something for a while just to save the blog from death but haven't been doing much in the way of woodworking. Thought this may be worthy of posting. Earlier in the year we took an upholstery course from a local upholsterer who is in the very early stages of setting up a school. There is more to it than I would have thought. Like wood, you have to be aware of the grain direction of the fabric and the matching of color, patterns and types. I think Ill...

Sunday, October 25, 2009. Good News and Bad News. Progress has been somewhat stunted by the still wet Boxwood in the kiln. I pulled it out a few days ago, the meter said it was dry but when I cut into it on the bandsaw it did the banana. I need it for all the frame members for the sides and doors, maybe I should have made the cabinet curved, then all the bending would have been done for me, heh. But the marquetry is now done and went pretty well! Cutting out the leaf parts. Tuesday, October 13, 2009.

Fine Works in Wood. Saturday, March 17, 2012. Unsigned Unsealed and Delivered. The dining set was delivered just before new years. That made it a 14 month project which on a part time basis was ok. I still need to resolve a couple issues, first being that it needs some kind of a signature. My dad wants his great grandkids to know the origins if it. Here are some photos, not professional but I ain't got no Ingaborg. Friday, November 11, 2011. I was a bit nervous at first but it does almost seem idiot proof.
