Christian Songwriter's Blog: March 2007

You've Got a Song! I'm sure you've been waiting in the deepest suspense to know the answers to the puzzle from last post, so I'll break the tension and tell you.The puzzle, or excersise, was to find and name the sharps or flats in the following keys, using Father Charles:. Is easy- it's one of the special cases we talked about. From the diagram, it looks like it should have 6 sharps, but it really has 1 flat. The key of G. In the key of G is F#. Naturally, has several flats. Find the number below. There ...

You've Got a Song! Did you decide what kind of layout your song is going to have? Now that you know how a song is laid out, you're ready to start writing the lyrics to your song. If you don't have a clue, don't worry; you will probably get some ideas as you write. Writing lyrics for a song is like writing a poem. Actually, it is. Has a certain number of lines which usually rhyme at the end. The lines can have different rhyme schemes. Often, a verse has 4 or 8 lines, and a chorus 4. A really long chor...

You've Got a Song! Diamond in the Rough. When you get a song that you are sure is from God, it's tempting to just keep it as it is, but don't give in to the temptation- don't be afraid to revise. You may find it helpful to get another songwriter to help you, but it can be uncomfortable giving your. Song to someone else. It may be better to tweak your own methods of sharpening a song. How did could a good song come out of that? C) 2005 Tim Heider. You're my Light and my Glory. You reign above all others.

You've Got a Song! Any Fred Astair fans out there? Now that you have your song outlined, you need to know how a song is arranged before you start writing the lyrics. Pop songs (popular music) are usually divided into several parts, each with a different purpose. In this post, I'll show you what each part is and its function in a song. The most important part of a song is the Chorus. Some songs are made up only of a chorus. An example is the old tune, "Seek Ye First":. Seek ye first the kingdom of God.

You've Got a Song! 1) Music that is spiritually harmful. A steady diet of music that promotes drugs, sex, alcohol, and ungodly living is certainly going to tear you down spiritually. This kind of music feeds the flesh and stirs it up to do unholy things. Stay away from it! 2) Music that is spiritually neutral. 3) Music that is spiritually uplifting. This is the best kind of music. Ephesians 5:19 tells you to "speak to one another in psalms and hymns.singing and making melody in your. Until Next Time,.

You've Got a Song! In order to make use of different keys, it is necessary to memorize which notes are sharp or flat in that key. You could write them out, like I did in my last post, and memorize them, but their's an easier way. Just memorize the following phrase:. Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle. In this phrase (which means nothing at all), the beginning letter of each word is each note name:. Of each letter, we put a number that indicates the number of. Now, for the. Keys, we put a number.

You've Got a Song! Now you're probably asking, " How do I make all that rhyming stuff (and everything else) fit with my song? I'm glad you asked! Remember when I talked about taking notes and writing down ideas for a song? Start with the sound that you want to rhyme with, in this case "-ame." Now, starting with "A" add a letter of the alphabet to the begining of that sound. If you start with "A" you get "aame." Is that a word? The name of Jesus is above ev'ry name. The name of Jesus redeems me from shame.

You've Got a Song! In my last post I talked about how a melody is made up of different pitches that go up and down in a certain order. I also discussed the how Western music is made up of 12 notes called the chromatic scale:. The picture at the top show the notes on the piano. Notice that the black keys have two note names. I'll explain why later. There are 14 diatonic scales, called major scales. But really, they're all the same. I'll explain more about scales in my next post. We're starting a magazine!
