About Me - Ian Michael McManus - AIEA (Institute of East Anglian Artists). Welcome to my website. I was born in a small village just outside Cambridge, and while at school, the only subject I was really interested in was art, particularly relief sculpture. I have done a variety of jobs throughout my life, none of which fulfil the creative side of my nature, and that’s probably why thirty years or so after leaving school, I thought I’d take up art again. My subjects are taken from everyday life, from the ...

Gary's Studio: Enamelling pt2
http://willowsprints.blogspot.com/2014/08/enamelling-pt2.html
Thursday, 21 August 2014. Having created the framework the next step was to fill it with glass. I started by adding clear flux or clear glass suspended in water. Surface tension allows the mix to hang between the spars. the piece was then fired and hopefully the glass melts across the gap. Framework being prepared on workbench. Piece being fired at about 800 C. Piece after initial firing showing flux filling the cells. Lucy Corrander at Loose and Leafy. 21 August 2014 at 11:20. 21 August 2014 at 11:22.
Gary's Studio: Silversmithing Course (PT2)
http://willowsprints.blogspot.com/2013/11/silversmithing-course-pt2.html
Thursday, 7 November 2013. The next stage of the project was to solder the ends onto the body of the box. Both ends wee soldered then the top was cut off with a piercing saw. One the sections had been perfectly alined by filing the bezel needed to be fitted. It was shaped on a forming mandrel to form a perfect fit inside the box. Once it was sized it could then be soldered together. The next step will be soldering into the box. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Fans of my blog.

Other IEA and Member Events. Ian was born just outside Cambridge, and the neighbouring village had an excellent college where he spent four years of his secondary education waiting impatiently for the weekly art lesson, taught by a very inspirational teacher. On leaving college with only O level (in art), Ian worked for the next twenty-five years doing jobs that did not fulfil his creative hankering. Ian had his first solo exhibition at Picturecraft in 2011, and is having his fourth in May 2014. He recen...
Gary's Studio: September 2013
http://willowsprints.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Monday, 16 September 2013. I had a bit of a frustrating day at work today so to de-stress I thought I would have a practice at Copper smithing. I have signed up for a course at Central St Martins in London starting in October to learn basic Silver smithing so I thought some practice on Copper was a good idea. I have also got some idea's for some silver bowls and dishes but I want a bit more experience before I tackle them. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Follow me on Facebook.
Gary's Studio: July 2013
http://willowsprints.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Friday, 26 July 2013. I made this Copper Bangle this evening as an experiment. I used a combination of line and T folds to texture the metal and then Liver of Sulphur to add a patina. I am very pleased with the results so hopefully I will have some for sale before to long. Thursday, 25 July 2013. Fold Formed Brass Flower. Fold formed Brass Flower. I also plan to use these techniques to make some large sculptures for the garden, but I will need to scale things up a bit for that. Monday, 22 July 2013.
Gary's Studio: March 2013
http://willowsprints.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Friday, 22 March 2013. When I got back I thought I would go out to the studio and try and do some work. Try as I might I can't settle to do anything, I am afraid the dreaded 'Black dog' is upon me again, I have been in bad depression for weeks now, everytime I think I am coming out of it, it gets me again. Sunday, 10 March 2013. This is the used target that I received last week. And my draft drawing for the print I want to use sketched out on the lino block. Snug in the studio while it's snowing outside.
Gary's Studio: February 2013

Sunday, 24 February 2013. Drawing sketched out on Lino block prior to cutting. Lino block during cutting. I use wood carving chisels to cut the image as these produce a much more defined cut than Lino cut tools. I mix the colour I want from raw pigments, I have to remember to mix up enough colour for an entire print run to ensure consistancy. Applying colour to the block. I roll the blended pigments with clear extender ink on a glass plate. Block and paper are placed in the press. Sunday, 10 February 2013.

Tuesday, 19 November 2013. Well the box is finally finished, all that remained to do was filing all the surfaces to remove fire stain (copper that moves to the surface of the silver during heating, Sterling silver is 925 parts silver, 75 part copper) and sanding with fine grades of wet and dry paper. I di not use a polishing wheel as this would have rounded off the edge causing the loss of the nice sharp look. It would be at least £400 given that 25 hrs work went into it. 19 November 2013 at 16:57. The g...

Ian Michael McManus - Watercolour Artist
About Me - Ian Michael McManus - AIEA (Institute of East Anglian Artists). Latest Exhibition: Ian McManus' One Man Show 2017. Welcome to my website. I began with acrylics and then moved on to oils, but I was never happy with my efforts. I realised I needed to learn the art of painting from the beginning again and enrolled in an art course at the local college. However, the only course available was for watercolour, so I thought I’d give it a go! My subjects are taken from everyday life, from the UK to Fr...
