Before his accident, Ian worked in the construction industry, so it is not surprising that he should choose to make that industry the focus of his subsequent working life. Ian accepted an invitation to take part in a HSE video production ‘Turning Concern into Action’ and before long he found himself in popular demand by several national construction companies asking him to address their large and diverse workforces directly on construction site locations around the UK.

Each year NEBOSH presents an award to the best candidate in the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety. We are delighted that in support of the Foundation, NEBOSH agreed to change the name of this annual award to the Ian Whittingham Prize. This change took effect from the 2010 Graduation and Awards Ceremony. When and where does it take place? The Graduation and Awards Ceremony takes place every June at Warwick University. Ian felt so strongly that his accident was preventable that he vowed to educate others (both workers and employers) in how to work safely. Through sheer determination he put himself through as many safety training courses that he could and began campaigning for improved safety awareness and personal worker responsibility up and down the length of the UK. I'm an Artist and teacher. I live and work in Cairns, North Queensland, Australia. I trained as a secondary Visual Arts teacher in Adelaide, graduating in 1989. Since then I have worked in Queensland, South India, Cambodia and Adelaide. I have taught mostly in Queensland state schools, but also in private international schools, youth detention centres, development organisations and as a freelance trainer. Ian Whittingham MBE was a remarkable man. He worked as a roofer in the industrial roofing contracting industry. In 1993, while at work, he slipped on some roofing sheets and fell 25 feet, leaving him paralysed from the waist down. Sadly, Ian died in April 2009 following problems he encountered after suffering a stroke the previous year.
