The Remains of the Day. Tuesday, 1 April 2008. This is an extract from the novel. Remains of the Day. By Kazuo Ishiguro. The extract is built up by a 'showing and telling' structure, where the first paragraph is showing and the second is telling. This pattern repeats itself throughout the extract. The effect of this structure is that the main character can both convey to the reader his real emotions while he, at the same time, can keep his mask of dignity on towards Miss Kenton, or Mrs Benn.
