Killin' time being lazy: I just have to rant
http://lazygal.blogspot.com/2015/06/i-just-have-to-rant.html
Killin' time being lazy. A miscellany of thoughts, newsclips and ephemera. I just have to rant. Years ago, in high school and college, there were teachers/professors we knew were more friendly than they should be, that there were some who had inappropriate relationships with students. True or not, things were different then and we didn't get as upset about the abuse of position and trust and all that as we do now. I'm not defending, just sayin'. I had a friend who was raped. And now there's a teacher who...

Killin' time being lazy: Grumble Millennials Grumble
http://lazygal.blogspot.com/2015/07/grumble-millennials-grumble.html
Killin' time being lazy. A miscellany of thoughts, newsclips and ephemera. Yes, I'm an old fogey and getting older by the minute. The past week just proves it. Sunday, while shopping, I attempted asking a question about a product. The young'un in charge of that area was so involved with her texting that I gave up. Or that when you're sitting at a table with younger colleagues (and by younger, read "young enough to be your children") they make polite conversation or - at the very least - they acknowledge ...

Killin' time being lazy: Reflections
http://lazygal.blogspot.com/2015/04/reflections.html
Killin' time being lazy. A miscellany of thoughts, newsclips and ephemera. Every five years, for the past 35, I've been getting together with my high school classmates (not all 105 of them, but as many as 30 at a time). It's called Reunion. And this weekend is my 35th. Gulp. Overall, I have to say, life is pretty good. Yes, there's the acedia. Well as of right now I'm 3 books behind on my 2015 goal (a couple of good weekends should take care of that). But overall? Tip of the C.A.P.: "So You Don't Have To": A Visit to Lycoming College
http://captip.blogspot.com/2015/04/so-you-dont-have-to-visit-to-lycoming.html
Wednesday, April 29, 2015. So You Don't Have To": A Visit to Lycoming College. At the end of April I visited Lycoming College. I think that Lycoming College is one of the best-kept secrets in higher education as it provides its students the kind of supportive, close-knit community of learners that many colleges strive for, but few achieve. I am glad to "spill the beans" (more about the beans later) and make Lycoming better known. Lycoming College At A Glance. Lycoming has rolling admissions with a priori...

Tuesday, July 21, 2015. Tips For Making A College Visit. As I noted in my last post. I was a college counselor for many years prior to working with Method Test Prep. And one of the most important pieces of advice I would give to my students was to encourage them to do whatever they could to visit the colleges to which they applied. The following are some thoughts that might help you plan your visit and make it a successful one. 8226; It’s Almost. Always A Good Time To Visit. While every college website i...

Website, blog and vanity nexus of writer R F Brown. All Things Concentered- book review of ‘ALL THINGS CEASE TO APPEAR,’ by Elizabeeth Brundage. May 18, 2016. All Things Cease To Appear. A work of literary merit that happens to begin with a murder suspect ruminating on Emerson and an ax in the skull of the protagonist. In other words, author Elizabeth Brundage eludes the general classification of a novel into Genre Fiction or Literary Fiction. All Things Cease To Appear. In its breadth,. In the sense of ...

Killin' time being lazy: Shock and Sorrow
http://lazygal.blogspot.com/2015/08/shock-and-sorrow.html
Killin' time being lazy. A miscellany of thoughts, newsclips and ephemera. It's not just that the author has completely missed the point of the story of Esther, or that she's created a relationship that simply would never have happened in real life. Getting entered for the award isn't a problem either - many books get published and many books get submitted for various awards. The bigger problem for me is that the committee for this award didn't read the book and think, "wait - what? Jennifer worries abou...

Tip of the C.A.P.: "So You Don't Have To": A Visit to Rochester Institute of Technology
http://captip.blogspot.com/2015/04/so-you-dont-have-to-visit-to-rochester.html
Tuesday, April 21, 2015. So You Don't Have To": A Visit to Rochester Institute of Technology. As promised, I will use this space to share my experiences visiting colleges with you. Hopefully you will find these notes useful. If you like the schools I discuss you should do everything you can to visit on your own, but this will tide you over until you are able to get there yourself. In mid-April I visited Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Rochester Institute of Technology At A Glance. The Early Deci...

Tip of the C.A.P.: November 2014
http://captip.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Sunday, November 9, 2014. My Thoughts on Three New College Admissions Methods. At age 17, I decided to limit my college search to tiny Marlboro College. In Vermont (which eschewed traditional classes for one-on-one tutorials) and Hampshire College. But why did these colleges choose me? Which gave me a boost to what would nowadays be an 1170. Back then, though, I was kind of on my own, and I think that my admission came down to three factors:. I don't remember Marlboro's essay, but Hampshire had several t...
