Soon to be seal food. Phil's Palmer Station Deployments. Wednesday, February 14, 2007. This has been the season for prestigious visits to Palmer Station. In late January, we received Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne. Along with her husband. That was an honor and an amazing time to meet her and show her the aquarium and labs. Yesterday was an even more amazing experience. Paul Allen. Paid a visit to Palmer aboard his yacht, the Octopus. View the PowerPoint tour of this yacht. And his wife Donna Dixon.

Soon to be seal food. Phil's Palmer Station Deployments. Saturday, March 10, 2007. As I start to wrap up my season at Palmer, I'm looking forward to visiting friends and family again. I'm particularly looking forward to our second annual Curling Bonspiel in Rapid City, SD. I plan on being there for this one as well- wouldn't miss it for the world. Here are some pictures from last year:. The ice doubled for a hockey rink so we posed for a face off. The Team: Phil, Scott, Mike, Tony. Soon to be seal food.

Soon to be seal food. Phil's Palmer Station Deployments. Tuesday, December 25, 2007. An Early Christmas Gift. Christmas came early last week. Three humpbacks showed up in Arthur Harbor two days later. We were able to get out in the zodiacs to get a closer (but not too close) look. The whales caught site of us and decided to do some people watching. They were friendly and inquisitive. It's amazing to see such huge and beautiful creatures up close in the wild. Checking out the boat. Is for I L. David Barbe...

Soon to be seal food. Phil's Palmer Station Deployments. Sunday, September 30, 2007. Do Not Open Until in Antarctica. Last summer I visited my family in AK. The night before I left, my niece Skye gave me present that said, "Do Not Open Until in Antarctica". So I packed the present, and it burned a hole in my bags I was so anxious to open it. Once things settled down after the hectic season opening, it was a nice sunny day- the kind of day you open special presents. Reading her special note. We arrive to ...

Soon to be seal food. Phil's Palmer Station Deployments. Sunday, April 01, 2007. Just before the Gould came in this last time, some Gentoos stopped by station right near the seawater pump house. We all took a break to check them out a little bit. I took the time to make a nice pose, too. Just like a senior picture for the yearbook, right? Posted by Charlie Food @ 6:38 PM. Fluke with Mt. Williams. I had one more awesome encounter with some humpback whales, too. We weren't whale watching, they. The Lawrenc...

Soon to be seal food. Phil's Palmer Station Deployments. Monday, December 25, 2006. It's Christmas, and tonight we will be doing a little gift exchange. Some people bring presents down, give gift certificates to online stores, make something here, or offer their services (a massage, do your laundry, or take your kitchen cleaning duty for a day). Sadly, my game is not as hot as I look when I'm playing it. Posted by Charlie Food @ 2:12 PM. A few weeks ago, a King penguin showed up on Torgersen Island. ...

Soon to be seal food. Phil's Palmer Station Deployments. Tuesday, January 30, 2007. Krill are a type of zooplankton. Is estimated to be greater than the entire human population. Krill school on the underside of the ice. This group is looking at krill populations from year to year and how it has been changing and/or cycling, among other things. Many other animals rely on krill for its main food source- seabirds, penguins, seals, whales, fish, and others- so it's a very important part of the food web.

Soon to be seal food. Phil's Palmer Station Deployments. Sunday, November 19, 2006. Later that night, i saw the most beautiful sunset across the water as the Gould took the State Department on their way. This picture was taken and stitched together by my roommate Frank, who traveled down with me. It's hard to capture the scenery and do it justice, but this picture does really well. Posted by Charlie Food @ 8:31 PM. Posted by Charlie Food @ 8:26 PM. For me. Yes, very sad. Posted by Charlie Food @ 8:01 PM.

Soon to be seal food. Phil's Palmer Station Deployments. Thursday, November 08, 2007. A beautiful evening on the porch. It's been a busy time here supporting the newly arrived science groups and keeping the station running. As you probably know, the ship has not been able to tie to the pier without the proper mooring pins in place. The ship needs to be securely in place to pump off fuel for station. Pose with the Bollard Celebrity. Some good porch time after work. Posted by Charlie Food @ 6:24 PM. Field ...
