http://ichijoji.blogspot.com/2015/03/the-flowers-of-yagyu-coded-language-and.html
Sumi-e, strategy and swordsmanship - inspired by the arts of Miyamoto Musashi. Tuesday, 31 March 2015. The flowers of Yagyu: coded language and layers of meaning. It is the beginning of April, and cherry blossom is just appearing. In a week or so, it will be falling, which brings to mind this verse from Yagyu Jubei’s Tsuki no Sho, a verse which, incidentally, Jubei credits to the priest Takuan. The fine rain that dampens my clothes. Yet I see it;. The blossom that falls earthwards. Knowledge was closely ...

A Head Full of Monkeys: FOOD

And just because I'm enraptured by "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" doesn't mean that I think that consuming endless quantities of foods that emerge from the deep-fat fryer, get buried in melted cheese and drowned in hot sauce is what the Tao Te Ching has in mind for us. 160;Links to this post. A Head Full of Monkeys: THE MONKEYS
http://www.aheadfullofmonkeys.com/p/monkeys.html
Many forms of tai chi include a move known as "Step Back to Repulse Monkeys," illustrated in the header at the top of the page. Properly done, it resembles the "Brush Knee" movement done in reverse. Evidently the allusion, which can be found in numerous Asian cultures, is to the incessant screeching and chattering of certain species of monkeys, which resembles the internal chaos that can infect a person's mind. I was stunned. No meds? And that's the genesis of A Head Full of Monkeys. Be not defeated by t...

A Head Full of Monkeys: ZHAN ZHUANG
http://www.aheadfullofmonkeys.com/p/zhan-zhuang.html
Of all the forms and styles of the Internal Arts, Zhan Zhuang ("standing like a post" or "standing like a tree"). Is the most paradoxical and counter-intuitive. Standing still, in a variety of poses. Nothing more than that. These exercises are, however, part of the basis of all Internal Arts. Not only do they strengthen your muscles and bones, and improve the function of your internal organs, but they facilitate the flow of chi through the body, which is critical for successful practice of tai chi. For t...

Sumi-e, strategy and swordsmanship - inspired by the arts of Miyamoto Musashi. Friday, 23 March 2018. A Pointed Story – Saigo's dog's ears. Statue of Saigo Takamori in Ueno Park. From a print by Watanabe Nobuzazu (1899). The whole print may be seen here. Japan has had a long and conflicted relationship with dogs (and, indeed, with the concept of loyalty) varying from using them as target practice for inuoumono,. Sunday, 5 July 2015. Links to this post.
