Το αριστερό του χέρι κρατούσε γερά το κάγκελο της βεράντας. Το δεξί έπαιζε τρέμοντας με τα κουμπιά της ριγέ πυζάμας. Με μεγάλη προσπάθεια, έκανε άλλο ένα αργό βήμα, προς τη γυναίκα του, που άπλωνε απορροφημένη τα ρούχα τους. Γυναίκα του, εδώ και 65 χρόνια. Τον παρακολουθούσα με οίκτο από το απέναντι μπαλκόνι των 17 μου χρόνων. Έσυρε άλλη μία φορά το ένα πόδι μπροστά απ’το άλλο και παραιτήθηκε κουρασμένος. Στήριξε όλο του το βάρος στο κάγκελο και τη φώναξε. Εκείνη γύρισε ξαφνιασμένη, τον κοίταξε και είπε.

Και φαντάστηκα στρατιές από αλαφιασμένα ανθρωπάκια, σκυμμένα προς την καρδιά τους, να μαστορεύουν ασταμάτητα ενώ περπατούν, μιλάνε, δουλεύουν, πίνουν, γαμάνε. Να στήνουν πρόχειρα, αυτοσχέδια συνεργεία, να ψάχνουν με αγωνία ταιριαστές βίδες, να κλέβουν μπουλόνια και γαλλικά κλειδιά, να εφευρίσκουν εξαρτήματα, να προσαρμόζουν σωλήνες.
