Incidental findings: August 2011

https://ifinding.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Ut aliquid fieri videatur. Privileged #4 - Thankful. On ICU call, sometimes it can get pretty awful. It took 4 guys to muscle the patient onto his back so we could finally check for a rhythm. Of course: pulseless electrical activity. PEA is a really painful code, not because it is difficult or complicated, but because it is so frustrating. Everything on the monitor looks right, except that your patient is dead. Posted by incidental findings. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). One is too much.

Incidental findings: Indignation

https://ifinding.blogspot.com/2015/02/indignation.html

Ut aliquid fieri videatur. In reality, what does indignation get you? Nothing. That smug feeling of self-satisfaction and superiority, it is comforting in the moment, but it does not give the patient a better outcome. It doesn't lower A1c. There is pride in your work, and it's good to have a sense of ownership and pride in what you do, but indignation? It is worth the paper it's written on. Posted by incidental findings. Ut aliquid fieri videatur. Don't become a doctor #19 - biased. I have many gay patients. One travels over an hour to see me because he says I'm the only doctor who treats him like a person. One sees me because he has a crush on me. In real life, I've had gay men hit on me, so I have some basis for comparison. I don't do anything specifically to draw in gay patients. They just find their way to my practice. Posted by incidental findings. Links to this post. Topics: Dont become a doctor. Nothing. That ...

Incidental findings: November 2012

https://ifinding.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Ut aliquid fieri videatur. Don't become a doctor #17 - a checkered past. This is the part of being a doctor that people do not like to talk about. Being a doctor does not come with a clean white coat. It comes with a painful history. To take credit for all the amazing things done by physicians, we must also own all the terrible things we have done, and still do, and there are so many. In the name of research, we have done things like the Tuskegee syphilis experiment. On so many occasions. And still, we c...

Incidental findings: September 2012

Ut aliquid fieri videatur. So, a doctor riding a bicycle to work gets Internet attention. It's a cute story for sure, but it's only a small appetizer of what it means to be a professional. If you want the entree, read about Carlo Urbani. Posted by incidental findings. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). An average, Asian internist. Why I didn't do oncology. How to deliver horrible news. How to write an HPI. The art of medicine. One is too much. Why I chose medicine.

An oldie but a goodie | Be Still, My Beating Heart

https://cardiactamponade.wordpress.com/2012/02/14/an-oldie-but-a-goodie

Be Still, My Beating Heart. An oldie but a goodie. By Eduardo Jose E. Calasanz. I have never met a man who didn’t want to be loved. But I have seldom met a man who didn’t fear marriage. Something about the closure seems constricting, not enabling. Marriage seems easier to understand for what it cuts out of our lives than for what it makes possible within our lives. What keeps love alive in them, when most of us seem unable to even stay together, much less love each other? Beware of a relationship in whic...

vitum medicinus ::: a life of medicine: The Thrill of Flying with Helicopter Paramedics

http://blog.vitummedicinus.com/2007/03/thrill-of-flying-with-helicopter.html

Thursday, March 29, 2007. The Thrill of Flying with Helicopter Paramedics. Last week I had a lifelong dream come true: I lined up the chance to shadow with a helicopter paramedic crew. Today, the day finally came, and on the drive there my heart was racing. It was a gorgeous, clear day - perfect for flying. Andwell, actually, that was it. For the first time in over a year, none of the helicopters even left the ground. I sat around in the station for the entire twelve-hour shift, waiting for a call. That ...

Her medical condition is deteriorating slowly but surely, and she doesn't know what she wants to do, or if she does know, she's not great at telling me. Sometimes, medical paternalism is nice. Sometimes, I really want to tell this wonderful person that I know what to do, and that I know the right answer. But I'm not God. I can only guess. Links to this post.
