My last day as a non-tourist is tomorrow. This little spot in Africa has become my home away from home for the last six weeks. I have made incredible friends, met amazing people, and hopefully done a little good. Stay tuned for pictures and hopefully more stories. I Had a Farm Plot in Africa…. Newer posts →. June 23, 2008 · 3:05 pm. Those of you who have seen. I had my first moment of TIA frustration at lunch today. The menu on the wall listed about 20 items. Only two were available. But it took requesting about a dozen before discovering this. The conversation when something like this (and it was all in Swahili, fyi):. Me: “I’d like ugali and meat please.”. Server: “No.”. Me: “No I can’t have it, or no you don’t have it right now.”. Server: “No.”. Maybe I was bei...

I Had a Farm Plot in Africa…. Isaya: Maasai Bad Ass →. July 26, 2008 · 2:42 pm. Night in the Boma. I met Isaya through work. He was a trainer on HIV/AIDS education and its connections to Tanzanian culture. He is traditional Maasai: he wears a shuka (checkered cloth), carries a herding cane, wears tire shoes (actually made out of rubber tires), and lives in the Maasai steppe on a boma. Were a pitiful sight; collectively we jumped a foot in the air–tops. A common Tanzanian food made from maize; it most clo...

My good friend Heath (aka "Funny Uncle Heath) Druzin has taken a major leap in his reporting career, from the rugged American West to the somewhat wilder west of Iraq. He recently started a year-long reporting gig with Stars and Stripes. The preferred newspaper for America's military) as an embedded reporter in Iraq. He'll also be reporting from Afghanistan later on during his contract. Finally, something interesting to post about. Something truly Washingtonian. Something that made yesterday one ...Word ...

It was heartbreaking to see how she'd deteriorated. I'm still not entirely sure she recognized me. In December, when I'd seen her last, my mom told her that I'd come from Washington to see her. And she looked amazed that I'd traveled such a distance. She sort of understood it. In March, she didn't even really speak. I held her hand, and stroked her hair, and kissed her on the forehead over and over. Then I said goodbye. I love you. And I miss you so, so much. On distinction and fresh fruit. My thesis def...

I left Kiev behind yesterday after two jam-packed days and am now in green and lush Holland, where I've enjoyed a stroll on the beach with a caipirinha, and some lovely local sheep with whom I've made friends. More importantly, I've been visiting with my old friend Molly who I haven't seen in several years. It's been a lot of fun catching up. But first, a recap of the last few days:. I know I'm pretty much the worst blogger in the world, but I really haven't had anything interesting happen to me lately - that is, until this past Tuesday. Below is an essay I wrote for the Armenian Reporter about my experiences in Washington this week. Enjoy! When I woke up at 4 am January 20, 2009, I certainly didn't think that at the end of the day I'd be sitting next to President Obama and Vice President Biden. As the sun set and the parade continued on, my feet started to go numb and ache from the ...

Chocolate bacon = happiness. This is an equation I have always firmly believed in, as the two represent some of my favorite food groups. Much has been written. And so, to recreate the two glorious nights it took me to pull this off - and cause our apartment to smell of bacon for roughly a week - I hereby present you with a step-by-step guide to chocolate-covered bacon. Step 1: Fry lotsa bacon. Step 2: Melt chocolate in which to dip delicious bacon. You may be wondering. If you've met the man of my dr...

It's been a while. The trouble with blogging is that it's not very interesting to blog when you have nothing to blog about. I pointed this out to the V when he was complaining about my un-updated blog this weekend. He helpfully reminded me that I DO have something to blog about. Two words: NEW. JOB. OK, three words: HOORAY! Russia, Ukraine, Azerbeijan, and.Armenia! Hopefully I'll get to travel to all, but most likely the first two at least a couple times a year. They already knew me over at IREX. Still i...

Strasvutsye (Hi, in Russian). A few observations about Ukraine:. 4 While this experience so far has been totally fulfilling and engaging, I'm still not convinced the NGO life is the one for me. It's also yet another reminder of how much I miss journalism and a life of deadlines. Am I ready to go back to the newsroom yet? Not quite. At least, not while I can still take a few more trips like this one on somebody else's dime. Stay tuned for more tomorrow. Join us (again), Sleezy, join us.

Getting out of dodge. I've been quiet lately mostly because there hasn't been much to say. Since school ended, I've been enjoying the life of a regular DC civillian. I read far too many magazines, journals, and books, discuss politics and foreign policy with my colleagues and friends alike, go out to dinner and even make a few new things, and generally feel like I'm melting every time I leave the house. Thursday we'll take a train back to Michigan, only this time to Kalamazoo, home of Vahan's alma mater.

I Had A Dream My Life Would Be....
I Had A Dream My Life Would Be. Monday, June 1, 2009. Playing at the camp site. The boys had fun playing with their rocket shooters. There was another little boy camping next to us that the boys befriended.it was nice for them to have someone new to play with :o). Camden is turning into quite the punk. He just jumped up in the seat on top of Caden and wouldn't let him up. Camden is getting ready to go "surfing" at the indoor pool. The boys were fried from the day before, so we spent a day inside :o).

I Had a Farm in Africa. December 16, 2017. December 16, 2017. I always wanted to be married to a farmer. Every once in a while God reveals something of your hearts desire.
