Back to the Body Work. Here is the door with 4 coats of high build primer surfacer, and a mist coat of black base coat serving as a "guide coat" to help during the block sanding in determining between the high and low spots. Here are the fenders before sanding. It was no longer really there. It looks like a much bigger problem than it really is. Here I have determined the control areas of the panel and have attached steel tabs to the surface of the trunk. With the trunk lid laid in place with only the tabs holding it even with the body the best possible fit is revealed. On the left we find a 3/8 inch discrepancy between the panel and the body. The area outlined in black would have to be built up with layers of fiberglass to bring the two surfaces into alignment. Also notice how tight the gap is at the rear as compared to the front. With the metal work and primary body work completed on the front fenders and doors it is time to seal the bare metal with a catalyzed epoxy based primer-sealer for proper adhesion to the bare metal, and future corrosion protection. Minimal body work was necissary before priming. Shortly after the epoxy sealer has set, the urethane primer-surfacer is applied. Three thick coats will provide enough build up to allow for finish sanding for a dead straight paint ready surface. Out of the Shop. Out of the Shop.

MPC Auto Tech Trophy. The replacement steel trunk lid needs to be stripped and final fit, then the fiberglass spoiler needs to be attached. Here we can see some rust areas on the replacement trunk lid; fortunately these areas will need to be trimmed away to fit the spoiler. The old weatherstrip will have to be replaced before a final fit can be obtained. New weatherstrip is glued into place for an accurate fit.
