Illustrated Numbers

Thursday, February 22, 2007. I know a lot of people who are intelligent. They really are - any way you look at it, they're sharp. If you get in an argument with them, they're very quick at picking up discrepancies and finding ingenious counter-arguments. They can navigate the maze of ideas with ease. But they all gave up on mathematics at one time or another, and even a mention of the word mathematics is a cue for them to start heading for the exit. Beyond the realm of the senses! Illustrated Numbers: Multiplication and beyond

http://illustratednumbers.blogspot.com/2007/02/lets-add-some-numbers-like-this-b-c.html

Friday, February 16, 2007. Let's add some numbers, like this:. Now let's start chopping things off the end of this list:. What remains if we chop off the a? The original expression was really. So if we remove all the pieces, we get 0. And it makes sense, if we never add anything, we're left with nothing. OK, let's now consider something very similar:. We know that if we start chopping things off, at some point there will be nothing left. Is that nothing zero? Then 1 * a. The next step would be a. Nice wa...

Illustrated Numbers: Where arrows are rotated

http://illustratednumbers.blogspot.com/2007/02/arrows-correspond-to-numbers-positive.html

Monday, February 19, 2007. Where arrows are rotated. Arrows correspond to numbers; positive numbers point right, negative point left, and they rotate each other when you multiply them. When we multiply two numbers, we add their angles and scale their magnitudes (arrow lengths). How do we get other arrows, with angles other than 0° and 180°? First, nothing prevents us from constructing one directly; here's one: 4(45°). The picture of it is below:. One is 4(45°), that much we already know. 180 / 4 = 45.

Illustrated Numbers: Arrows

http://illustratednumbers.blogspot.com/2007/02/lets-talk-about-little-arrows.html

Monday, February 19, 2007. Have you ever wondered, why is it when you multiply any number by itself, the result is a positive number? We all know that "minus times minus is plus", but why? To answer, let’s talk about arrows. For example, 1 looks like this. We can reverse, or negate, the arrow and make it go in the opposite direction. Negative numbers are arrows pointing left. To add two numbers, we place them one after another, like our feet. 3 is the same as 1 * 3, because * means repeated addition.

Cheap Chic is Back! And it's just as good as ever. The fashion classic (first published in 1975, with an unsuccessful "update" in 1978) went out of print sometime in the early 80s (although you could still find used copies around) and first editions were recently selling for outrageous prices online. Happily, Random House has re-issued Cheap Chic. With a new forward by Tim Gunn. I was a worried they would try to "update" it again, but it is as it was back in the day. Is divided into chapters that take ap...

A sometimes humorous look at politics and current events, combining writings and drawings to get the point across! There was an error in this gadget. Friday, January 9, 2015. Obama announced a "free" community college plan. He says "the government" should pay for community college "for everybody who is willing to work for it.". Set aside the fact that anybody who wants to go to community college right now, can. Actually work for it and go. Set all that aside. What this is really about is giving colle...
