Hannah in Costa Rica: September 2009
http://costaricanhannah.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Wednesday, September 30, 2009. The other day Sarita (a tica missionary who is fluent in Spanish and English) asked me to look at a math test she was giving her class. She couldn't figure out why her answers didn't match the book's. I showed her the few places early one where she mixed things up, and all was settled quickly. That's right though. I tought the teacher. Go ahead, call me Alex Dunlap. Mercado Central in downtown is essentially Pike Place Market, except with a lot more cockroaches. Sunday nigh...

Hannah in Costa Rica: August 2009
http://costaricanhannah.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Monday, August 31, 2009. Computer classes started today! I was very impressed by the girls' quick learning. The hardest thing for them so far has been controlling the mouse. My tica mom was telling me stories about a family she knows from Cuba. Their daughter had to get her wisdom teeth pulled without anesthetics. Apparently there is no soap available; all they use is lard. Did you know that 7 million people die every year from hunger-related deaths? So then she threw it. Onto my plate of food. It took m...

Hannah in Costa Rica: February 2010
http://costaricanhannah.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, February 28, 2010. This is where I work - we've seen a sudden splurge in girls attending the Institute since the government tests are around the corner, but we try to explain that showing up one month before the exam isn't gonna help a whole lot. Marielos (the woman in front) is the director of the school program. Nazareth, my 16-year-old math star who started having contractions on Thursday. Marcos and Beatriz (who I just started calling Mamí). The happy couple - Laura y Mauricio. A lot about ma...
