Image Culture SK: March 2010

http://imageculture2010seth.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, March 6, 2010. I enjoy visual media. Images tickle my fancy and my eyeballs, so to say. More importantly though, I have–as I understand the word–an aesthetic appreciation of images. A few words about me. After graduation I took the only position available (and agreeable) to a Literature Major with a Minor in Philosophy: I taught English and Psychology at a nontraditional, private school. Today I am enrolled in Teachers College's Teaching of English Master of Arts program. A picture of me.

Image Culture SK: The Contemporary

http://imageculture2010seth.blogspot.com/2010/04/contemporary.html

Tuesday, April 20, 2010. They say that Aristotle was the last person to understand the entirety of his culture. They go on to say that today's modern human lives in a world that is just too complex for one person to fully grasp. Aristotle, they might conclude, was the world's last, true contemporary. So, sitting outside the circle of popular art, the contemporary observes and comments. The artist at this year's Armory to whom I am referring did his commenting through his art:. I guess it's also true that...

Image Culture SK: ...a few words about me...

http://imageculture2010seth.blogspot.com/2010/03/few-words-about-me.html

Saturday, March 6, 2010. A few words about me. As an undergraduate student my academic focus was varied and my interests were unsettled. During the four years I spent studying at The College of New Jersey my major field of study jumped from Biology to Psychology, Psychology to Philosophy, and then after some time finally settled in English Literature. Today I am enrolled in Teachers College's Teaching of English Master of Arts program. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A few words about me.

Image Culture SK: Sexualized Images at the Armory Show

http://imageculture2010seth.blogspot.com/2010/04/sexualized-images-at-armory-show.html

Tuesday, April 20, 2010. Sexualized Images at the Armory Show. The pattern was simple. Obvious. To be expected. The nude figures portrayed were largely, and of the vast majority, female. Male nudes were not only rare, but even when they did surface, they were often presented in such a way as to be devoid of sexuality and instead wrought with a basic sense of anatomy. This was not always the case with the ladies. Instead, I would like to focus solely on the image I was not too shy to take a picture of tha...

Monday, March 15, 2010. McLuhan "The medium is the message". Is the Message" is a very interesting. Thursday, April 1, 2010. Article-People getting hired from their Flickr images. I thought that this article would be interesting for the class from "The New York Times". It tells a terrific story about a woman who uploaded her Hawaii vacation pictures onto Flickr, only to be hired by stock image company Getty Images. She now makes a monthly income from license fees of her photos. Here is the link. Http:/ www.nytimes.com/2010/03/30/business/media/30photogs.html. April 10, 2010 at 7:52 AM.

http://imageculture2010.blogspot.com/2010/04/i-was-at-dinner-party-last-night-for.html

Sunday, April 18, 2010. Although the conversation moved on, I was left wondering why this was so. Could it be that images of 9/11 were so abundant that people have become numb to some degree? Is it because the majority of dinner guests were living in the NYC-Long Island area when it happened versus the photo in discussion was taken in Sudan? Is it because 9/11 was an act of terrorism - humans against humans, whereas the image of the vulture and the boy is nature at its worst? May 6, 2010 at 2:49 AM.

Wednesday, March 24, 2010. The object stares back: on the nature of seeing By James Elkins. In regard to notion that seeing is a simple action. "Seeing is metamorphosis, not mechanism." (12). Elkins. Who claims three objects cannot be seen: the sun, genitals, and death. (103). A series of questions follow his argument of vision such as Why are these objects problematic for vision? Monday, March 15, 2010. I went to see the movie The Hurt Locker of Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow. In my opinion the entire movie was based on image emotion effect on a realistic documentarry type of style. Very heavy, emotional, and some realistic (unfortunately this hapend in the world). According to the NYtimes. 8220;The Hurt Locker,”. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow. The movie uses the images to address emotion to the extreme points. The movies also make a conection between individual and society.

http://imageculture2010.blogspot.com/2010/04/visual-journalism-we-can-all-take-part.html

Tuesday, April 20, 2010. Visual Journalism We Can All Take Part In. This morning I read an article that reminded me a lot of class and I thought it could be fun for us to participate in A Timely Global Mosaic, Created by All of Us. The basic idea is that everyone is invited to join in taking a photo on May 2 at the exact same moment to create a mosaic of one single moment in the life of our planet. Then you're supposed to send your photo to Lens, the photography blog of the New York Times.

April 12, 2010 at 9:57 AM. I think this is really interesting, Christy, and something that Ive thought a lot about. With so many images surrounding us, we can often become desensitized to them, especially if they happen elsewhere - they can mean nothing until they affect us closer to home.
