The Lost Railways of Angarth

The Lost Railways of Angarth. The 932 to Angarth. On the 31st September 1997, it was a cold morning in Angarth. As the 9.32am service for Carlisle (via Wygarth) left the station, the crowds that had gathered there to witness the departure of the last ever train slowly dispersed. Among them was sixteen year old Richard Saunders, who admitted that while he was not a railway enthusiast, he had come along that morning because it 'seemed like an important event'. Some items initially classified by the Museum.

Room 38 - Angarth. Is a small town in Scotland, not far from the English border. It has a rich and varied history which until now has been largely forgotten. In 2013, Dr James Lattin curated an exhibition based on the town. Many of the artefacts on display come from either the archive of the Angarth Museum or local country house Judley Hall. The world's largest collection of one pence pieces. Collected by Ambrose Judley on his 19th century Grand Tour. A now-lost collection of jars with a ritual context.

Dr James Lattin founded the Museum of Imaginative Knowledge in 2013. Its main areas of focus are cross-border cultures, contemporary archaeology and classificatory arts. It is particularly concerned with the investigation of objects and information which are not yet deemed museum quality by the current cultural norms. Room 39 - Wygarth. Is a small town in England, not far from the Scottish border. It has a rich and varied history which until now has been largely forgotten. Is focused on the study of what one might call everyday rural phenomena, such as gates, stone walls, hedgerows, piles of stones and telegraph poles. The Department's aim for 2015 is to build up a photographic catalogue of such occurrences which will then become the foundation for further research and exhibition.
